Hello all,

I need some help resolving a frequently recurring problem. I have a MacPro (2013 trash can) in a busy recording studio environment. I have several hard drives connected to my system. Some are spinning drives and some are SSDs.

My system is constantly disconnecting two of my drives every few hours. I get the system message "Disk Not Ejected Properly", they unmount from my desktop and then drives immediately reconnect themselves after a few seconds, but after a few short hours I will get the same message again. This happens several times throughout the day.

I have tried to do some research but cannot seem to find any solutions on the web or even things to try to resolve this issue. BTW, these are both BRAND NEW quality SSD drives. A 4TB and a 2TB. This issue also happened with to previous spinning dives I had hooked to my system. I thought the spinning drives were the problem which is why I purchased identical sized SSDs to replace them and restored my data to them.

I need help me to troubleshoot this problem or advice on what to try to resolve it? I consider myself fairly proficient in Mac as I have been using them professionally in my audio work for 30 years and successfully upgraded CPU, Memory, Hard drive and internal components on my own. I am just not sure where to begin to solve this issue.

FYI, I have looked at other Mac Rumor threads on this issue but found no answers.

I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide and tell me what you recommend in solving this problem.

Thanks so much in advance.

Darryl

Did you try disabling computer sleep?

If there's a problem with your Mac Pro's USB ports, then maybe the USB ports of a Thunderbolt dock will be better. Get a Thunderbolt 3 dock and you can get 10 Gbps USB.

Maybe a cable problem?

Maybe the enclosures that the drives are in have a problem?

What about the enclosures you are using. Did those ship with the SSDs or are they perhaps the same ones you were using for your hard disks?

Have you looked at the cables?

Lou
Sorry for the delayed reply. Yes I have tried alternate cables. Even though both these drives are BRAND NEW SSDs with new cables. I am now being told it could be the 16 port powered USB3 hub I have them plugged into. Just ordered a Thunderbolt 2 dock for the TrashCan Mac and plugging the drive directly into that to see if that resolves my problem. Will post an update soon.

How are they attached to the system? I'd look at an enclosure problem, if relevant.

Well here are the drives I purchsed. Small SSDs that came with their own buss powered enclosures. Got great user reviews. I really don't think its the drives.

I can't offer a solution, only mention my similar experience.

I've had constant issues with random disconnects. They usually happen after the computer wakes from sleep, but not always. The problem got pretty bad after Apple replaced the logic board. Prior to that, the disconnects did occur, but very infrequently.

My only solution (near perfect results) is to plug the my SSD drive directly into the computer and not into a hub attached to the computer. For my desktop drives which are in a docking station, I make sure that docking station is plugged directly into the computer. I've tried different hubs, but saw no improvement. The newest model hub I tried was a CalDigit TS3 Plus.

I did a check of the logs after wake from sleep and disconnect. I noticed that the OS seemed to search for the drives before the USB finished initializing. But, my interpretation of what I saw could be off.

I just renewed my Apple Care for the forth year. I plan on pursuing this with Apple, but don't expect much from them.

That’s a key detail missing from the OP. Could definitely be a dodgy hub. 16-ports is a massive USB hub, never seen one with so many ports.

Have you not tried simply connecting them direct to the USB 3 ports on the system?
