Frequent freezing

Please tell me it's nothing serious!

My 17" MBP 2.4 keeps freezing for no apparent reason. The other night it froze when I hooked my iPod up to it (the iPod froze as well). Then, this morning I plugged it in and opened up the lid and as it was waking up it froze (mouse jumped to the lower right corner by itself and everything stopped working). I was kinda in a hurry getting ready for work so I just shut the lid and went to eat breakfast thinking that by the time I got back in would be asleep.

Well, 5-10 minutes later I walk into my bedroom and I heard a sound that sounded like a truck engine outside, but it turns out the MBP was still frozen, and the fans were running at full speed (thus explaining the noise). I just held down the power button to shut it off, unplugged the power, and headed in here to work. I have installed a couple new programs (they came from Apple's download page) and a new widget (also from their page) but that's all. It seems like it all started a week or two ago. Actually, now that I think about it, it may have started when I downloaded the update for the SR MBP's a week or two ago (whenever that was released).

Does anyone have any suggestions?
 
Is it freezing (beach balling) or giving you a Kernel Panic? My only problems with Kernel Panics have come as a result of buying a Logitech mouse.
 
I've had a beach ball a few times. Usually when it happens I just force quit the program that is causing that. I've never had a kernal panic (that I know of).

It's just where everything becomes unresponsive and sits there in a vegitative state. Like I said, this morning the mouse jumped to the lower right corner when it woke up and then the computer became unresponsive. :(
 
Oohhhhh you'll know when you have a kernel panic. You have a bit of one yourself whenever it happens.

As far as your MBP goes, I'm sorry I really don't know. I was offering what seems to be my diagnostic for the week.

That's what I thought. I've never seen that appear on my screen, that's why I say that I know of. ;) Thanks anyway for the suggestions.
 
There was a thread a few weeks ago about the cursor freezing when using Firefox. That sounds like it may not be your issue, but you might want to find that thread.
 
For what it's worth, I jut got a MBP 17" w/ 4MB ram. I had my first freeze up last night. Basically, everything froze...mouse, computer, everything. I couldn't force quite and had to manually hold down the power button to restart it.

After the reboot, i went into the logs and it referenced the cause was from the Airport router.

I did a disk repair as a precaution and I'm hoping it's all good now. From what i've read on the boards though, this seems to be an issue with the Airport....so who knows.

Were you on wireless (airport) when it happened?
 
Nope. Nowhere near anything wireless, so I have airport turned off to save on battery life. The update I spoke of was supposed to fix the airport error.

EDIT: I just remembered the first time it did this. I don't remember the day, but my cousin came over and she needed a document printed. I tried printing it from Windows, and it wouldn't work, so I grabbed my MBP and plugged in her jumpdrive. Well, as soon as I plugged it in the machine froze. I rebooted both computers and the document finally printed (from the windows machine before I even logged into my account. My MBP booted up just fine and was ok for a few days. Just thought I'd add that little bit.

Nearest store is an hour and a half away. I plan on going over all my files and trashing stuff I don't need and then seeing if it has any problems after that. If it does I'll call AppleCare and get their opinion. I'll use the store as a last resort. Thanks for the tips though.

calling applecare first is a great choice! that way, it'll be documented in their system.

keep us updated once you find out the cause!!
 
Repaired disc permissions and used it for a while and it's been running great since then (but I've only used it for a little bit). I'll keep you updated if anything else goes on.
