frequent problem booting iMac with Leopard

I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 on an iMac and continuously have problems booting the machine. The boot process occasionally hangs at the gray screen, but more often it hangs at the blue screen. Sometimes it makes it to the login screen where the cursor occasionally freezes. Whenever these problems occur I have to shut down by holding down the start button, then restart again. Usually the second boot is successful. This booting problem occurs frequently, even after running Disk Warrior and repairing permissions. I don't think this is normal behavior. Has anyone else had such problems? Is there anything I can do to correct this behavior, or is this something that needs to be fixed by Apple?

It really does matter what model iMac you have, particularly whether it's a G3, G4, G5, or Intel and which particular one of those it is. There are well known issues on some iMacs as they age, so knowing what machine is involved helps.
 
most likely overheating since the cpu and hdd are utilized higher than normal during bootup. spotlight could also be reindexing when you see the blue screen or the OS could be verifying your hdd since you did a hard reboot last time, which will also generate more heat.

the white intel imacs have a serious problem with heat causing graphical glitches and system freezes/shutdown. some 1st gen aluminum imacs (2007) had gpu issues as well.

my advice would be to power it off and let it sit for a while to let it cool. then boot it up, disable spotlight temporarily, install imac fan control and crank up the internal fans.

Have a 5 year old IMac G5 and OS x 10.5.8 Leopard.
Had no problems for 5 years!!
Now, when I restart after the most recent update in september 2009 (4 updates including itunes 9.0), the Mac refuses to start up after the required restart.

I have used disk utility verify and repair but nothing to repair.
I have restored the Main from Time Machine and got all my Mac back in an older and perfectly workable version.
Then I did the updates again.

Now it is again not rebooting and I have to go again through 6 hours of complete restore from time machine.

Can anyone explain, is it really a heat problem?
When I take the Mac off the mains for 2 hours and restart, it wont work, so it cant be the heat can it?

Not sure why loading an OS would cause overheating. That would more likely during high CPU or GPU work such as video encoding and gaming.
