I've had 4 restarts in the last 2 days after I upgraded to 10.8.2. This on a 2011 MBA. I had none before. Anyone else seen this or else I'll look for a possible hardware problem ?

Correct. It is usually on sleep after closing the lid. When I reopen the lid either it displays a different background screen with the message "Your computer was restarted due to a problem. Send info to Apple ?" etc or I get a grey screen with a whole login cycle and then the "Your computer etc"

Has happened twice overnight and twice during daily use. Otherwise it wakes up as normal with all the open programme screens displayed etc.

Check your Console and let us know what it shows...these wake-from-sleep issues are really bothering me on 10.8.2 as well.

I didn't think about Console, next time I'll check.
Glad to see that it might not be hardware related.

It should still be there from the last crash. Just scroll back to the date/time of the last crash and you should see it.

Yes, that's the problem. Can't remember exactly. I've now taken to putting markers in every time I close the lid. I'll wait till the next event occurs.

Well it happened again.

Here's the end of the last sleep-down and the start of the "error" start-up :

Oct 7 14:55:02 Nero kernel[0]: Wake reason: RTC (Alarm)
Oct 7 15:55:00 Nero kernel[0]: RTC: SleepService 2012/10/7 13:55:00, sleep 2012/10/7 12:55:02
Oct 7 15:55:00 Nero kernel[0]: AirPort_Brcm43xx: powerChange: System Wake - Full Wake/ Dark Wake / Maintenance wake

Then there is a bunch of listings ending with another sleep at :

Oct 7 15:55:01 Nero.local airportd[709]: _doAutoJoin: Already associated to “CoEurl”. Bailing on auto-join.
Oct 7 15:55:31 --- last message repeated 1 time ---
Oct 7 15:56:12 Nero kernel[0]: AirPort_Brcm43xx: powerChange: System Sleep

Then more stuff ending at :

Oct 7 15:56:15 Nero kernel[0]: Wake reason: EC.SleepTimer (SleepTimer)
Oct 7 16:05:02 Nero kernel[0]: AirPort_Brcm43xx: powerChange: System Wake - Full Wake/ Dark Wake / Maintenance wake

Then more stuff ending at :

Oct 7 16:05:05 --- last message repeated 1 time ---
Oct 7 16:05:05 Nero kernel[0]: (default pager): [KERNEL]: ps_allocate_cluster - send HI_WAT_ALERT
Oct 7 16:05:05 Nero kernel[0]: macx_swapon SUCCESS
Oct 7 16:05:06 Nero kernel[0]: (default pager): [KERNEL]: ps_select_segment - send HI_WAT_ALERT
Oct 7 16:05:06 Nero kernel[0]: macx_swapon SUCCESS
Oct 7 16:05:07 Nero kernel[0]: (default pager): [KERNEL]: ps_select_segment - send HI_WAT_ALERT
Oct 7 16:05:07 Nero kernel[0]: macx_swapon SUCCESS
Oct 7 16:05:10 Nero kernel[0]: (default pager): [KERNEL]: ps_select_segment - send HI_WAT_ALERT
Oct 7 16:05:10 Nero kernel[0]: macx_swapon SUCCESS
Oct 7 16:50:52 localhost bootlog[0]: BOOT_TIME 1349621452 0

Then there is a whole lot of stuff listed. Any value to copy/paste it into here ?

So it looks as if it woke/slept 4 times from my shutting the lid and reopening it 2 hours later.

That looks more like normal Powernap behavior.

What you want to do is immediately after it crashes go back to the log at the exact time it crashed and there should be a crash report.

Well, here's where I reopened the lid and saw the error process :

Oct 7 17:14:34 Nero kernel[0]: /drv/ MacModule.cpp:309 powerStateDidChangeTo: found flag=kIOPMSleepCapability (4)
Oct 7 17:22:35 Nero.local loginwindow[55]: ERROR | -[LWScreenLock(Private) screenIsLockedTimeExpired:] | No lock state found, use built in check
Oct 7 17:14:34 Nero kernel[0]: Wake reason: EC.LidOpen (User)
Oct 7 17:22:35 Nero kernel[0]: AirPort_Brcm43xx: powerChange: System Wake - Full Wake/ Dark Wake / Maintenance wake
Oct 7 17:22:35 Nero kernel[0]: /drv/ MacModule.cpp:304 powerStateWillChangeTo: flags=2 stateNumber=3

What specific listings should I be looking for ? In what part of the Console reports will they be listed ?

Well, here's where I reopened the lid and saw the error process

I'm not familiar with this Nero business. I recall a Windows program Nero for CD burning, but that is not ringing a bell for me with OS X. Usually a Google search of the error message (Nero.local loginwindow in your case) will show others with the same problem, but I don't get one single hit on this search?

What have you installed beyond a bone stock system? I see you have Parallels installed. Did the problem start with the Parallels install? Is there a Parallels update maybe?

What is that Silex driver? Hmm... I found this with somebody else having your issue with that driver. It looks like some kind of wireless print driver. Try to uninstall that sucker and see if it helps.

Nero is the name of the MBA (an ex-cat).
Silex is a USB server that has just been updated for ML. I'll uninstall that temporarily.
I'll also uninstall Parallels - don't need that anymore.

All the problems started with the latest update to ML. Any way to roll back from that ?

Thanks for your interest.

PS According to the Console logs, I have 7 of these Kernel Panics, starting on 5th October. Sounds right for frequency. Does this still seem like a software problem ?

I've had the same issue - and I've chased down the 'apps' that supposedly cause the error message until I started getting apple services as the 'cause' of the problem. First it was my anti-virus. I un-installed, but still had errors. I've had about 8 reboots in the last week, 2 in less than 30 minutes, most frequently waking from sleep as well but had one hit after about 3 hours of use AFTER a full reboot (even updated 10.8.2 in that time) and still ended up with a crash. It's infuriating. I bought this computer because I was tired of BSOD - now all I seem to get is the WSOD. Is NO ONE else having this issue??

My latest error message:

Nero is the name of the MBA (an ex-cat).
Silex is a USB server that has just been updated for ML. I'll uninstall that temporarily.
I'll also uninstall Parallels - don't need that anymore.

All the problems started with the latest update to ML. Any way to roll back from that ?

Thanks for your interest.

PS According to the Console logs, I have 7 of these Kernel Panics, starting on 5th October. Sounds right for frequency. Does this still seem like a software problem ?

LOL Nero... that explains it. Was driving me nuts. :)

No way to rollback without an OS reinstall from an older version.

It does sound like a software conflict. I would try uninstalling Sirex and Parallels too see if that helps like you mentioned. Maybe try one at a time.

Drosx - yes. BIG mistake. Now every time I open textedit to save a copy of my error it defaults to iCloud. Which is annoying, but not nearly as annoying as this reboot issue.

Weasleboy - good luck with thinking it's only Nero, I'd be amazed. I uninstalled and uninstalled until it was apple services crashing.

I did however boot into safemode, run disk utility, it found some permissions to repair, then threw an error message saying the disk actually needed repaired, booted into whatever command + R is and repaired my disk hoping everything would be fine (I ran everything in disk utility after the repair, everything said ok). Only to reboot, work for about 4 hours and have ANOTHER repeat of the crash/reboot. I guess I'll be taking it into the 'genius' bar tomorrow...

Try TextWrangler instead of TextEdit. Much better programme.

I guess we'll all have to wait for 10.8.3 (Like they say, 3rd time's a charm)

Parallels has gone. Let's see what happens today.

Cheers.

This is not a Mountain Lion Issue. This is just your Macbook in problems.
Tough luck bro.

No, other people have the same problem.

----------

Well, no luck.

I uninstalled stuff and still got the same problem.
Then I reinstalled Mountain Lion and had the same problem.

How do I reinstall Lion in place of ML OR reinstall ML at the 10.8.0 level ?

Weasleboy - good luck with thinking it's only Nero, I'd be amazed. I uninstalled and uninstalled until it was apple services crashing.

There is no Nero app for OS X, and hence my confusion. His machine name is nero and that caused that first set of nero.local... entries. I was scratching my head  thinking the PC Nero disk burning program must have been ported to OS X and why could I not find it in The Google. :)

Well, no luck.

I uninstalled stuff and still got the same problem.
Then I reinstalled Mountain Lion and had the same problem.

How do I reinstall Lion in place of ML OR reinstall ML at the 10.8.0 level ?

Hmm... not good.

Did your machine come with Lion? Boot from a recovery USB key and format the entire drive (not just Macintosh HD). To do this click the drive name in Disk Util (like Samsung 128GB or whatever) then format. Now do a command-r boot and the system will see there is no OS and no Recovery HD and it will DL and install both from Apple's servers. If you machine came with Lion, you serial number is tied to Lion and that is what you will get from Apple.

If you machine came with ML, things are a little tougher. You could use the same process above, but Apple is going to give you the most recent 10.8.2 version of ML. You are going to need to get yourself a full installer version before 10.8.2 to do this.

Of course either of these scenarios will wipe all your data so make sure you have a backup.

Just as one last idea though, how about trying just a reinstall of Mountain Lion 10.8.2 right over top of your existing install. Sometimes that will fix a corrupted file/setting. Just do a command-r boot and reinstall. Make sure you are backed up, but this will not hurt your data. It will reinstall with everything in place.

It came with Lion. I just had the thought of doing this :
1. Clone the internal drive to an external and make sure I can boot from it.
2. Erase the internal drive and use CCC to create a Lion Recovery drive on the internal.
3. Disconnect the external and do an Internet recovery on the internal. That should get me a Lion install on the internal (yes?)

Sounds to me like the sequence you proposed.

Yes, I did a command-r boot and reinstall and it reinstalled 10.8.2 on top of existing. I still had a restart problem.

Probem than is how to get a Mountain Lion install that isn't 10.8.2 on the internal.

The problem with that is you need to have an existing Lion install to clone the Lion Recovery HD from. Where will you get the Lion Recovery HD as the source for the clone?

You can clone ML to the external then boot from it, and use Disk Util from the external to format the internal drive (again the whole drive and not just Macintosh HD). Then disconnect the external and command-r boot. You 2011 MBA can boot from firmware (EFI) even with no Recovery HD... and this is what will happen here. EFI will see no Recovery HD and pull one from Apple's server and install it.... then you can proceed with the normal install, which will also get pulled from Apple. This will give you Lion.

"The problem with that is you need to have an existing Lion install to clone the Lion Recovery HD from" - yes, that is what I found out.

"Then disconnect the external and command-r boot. You 2011 MBA can boot from firmware (EFI) even with no Recovery HD... and this is what will happen here." - doing this right now.

If I then upgrade to ML, how do prevent it from downloading 10.8.2 in place of 10.8.0 ?

That is the problem... if you get ML from the App Store you are going to get 10.8.2. If you can somehow get your hands on a 10.8.0 installer, you could use that then follow this to stop it from updating.

When I bought ML originally I did save something. It's a folder called : Install OS X Mountain Lion.app with a size of 4.07GB, so it might be what's needed. Question though is : What to do with it ?

I found a file in the innards called : InstallESD.dmg. Is it sufficient to mount and run that ?
