Fresh install of El Capitan on new SSD

Hi everybody,

a friend got me his MBPro 15" 2011, disk is gone and I suggested upgrading to an SSD and as such I ordered a Samsung EVO850.

Since I need to perform a fresh install I'd like you to point me out to some guide, I need to know how to partition the new drive and if I can go through the web installer by starting with the command+r or if there is some quicker option (e.g. downloading OS X as not to have to perform the online restore), also need to know about the "trim" bit, if there is need to install and if yes how to.

I like to make a bootable installer with a USB thumb drive:

The Bootable installer will let you boot using the boot manager (option key held at startup and select the USB thumb drive). Once booted to the thumb drive run Disk Utility and format the new drive for Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a GUID partition map. Then Quit the Disk Utility and Install the OS.

After you have booted to the USB key, you will screen where you can launch Disk Utility to format the disk. Just go to the erase tab in Disk Utility and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in the dropdown then apply that format. Don't worry about the GUID issue as that is the default. Then quit Disk Utility and install the OS. The installer will make a hidden, 650MB Recovery HD partition for you. You don't need to do anything make the recovery partition.

Once you are all done and booted into the OS and made your account, open Terminal application and enter the command below exactly like I have it and his return. You will be prompted for your password. That will enable TRIM.

sudo trimforce enable

The El Capitan installer (when you run it) will automatically make the hidden Recovery partition (650 Mb) for you. After El Capitan is installed you can test Recovery by holding keys command+r at startup (as you mentioned in your first post).

Meh... it is easy to type fast when I only type about 70% of the words correctly.

I did try many a times with the described method but it didn't work, starting up the computer by pressing option took me to the choice of either a network or the EFI partition of the USB key whilst inserting the memory stick in a running computer shows El Capitan installer... by the way I solved by networking two computers via firewire but I'd like to fix the problem cos soon I will have to clean up my MBPro and will go through the same process.

I had something similar a few times.
Try inserting the El Capitan installer on the running computer and waiting for it to show up in Finder and then immediately reboot while leaving the USB in place. Press and hold the option key as soon as you hear the startup chime.
Also make sure that that's the only USB device attached.
[doublepost=1455385882][/doublepost]You might also try recreating the installer disc on a USB 2.0 drive if you used a 3.0 drive originally.

How have you created the bootable installer? Have you tried Apple’s method?
