I wonder if I can do a fresh installation of ML from scratch and still keep using the WinXP that I did set up with Snow Leopard and Boot Camp?

XP survived the upgrade from SL to Lion without problems but now I would like to do a fresh installation and the release of ML seems to be a great opportunity. But I would not liked to also set up the Windows partition again (way too time consuming and I would need to buy a Win7 license). So I wonder if I could just keep using the WinXP that I have? will it survive?

When I clean installed Lion on one partition whilst I had windows 7 on the other, it wiped both. So I'm guessing it in your case it would remove windows xp. Not sure though as I haven't used ML.

Arg! That's really some bad news. Is there a way to kind of backup the WinXP partition and then put it back later?

Must have been a mistake then, because that's not the way it's supposed to work. When you erase a partition, it only erases that partition. The installer doesn't wipe anything, so I suspect you either repartitioned the drive (removing the Windows 7 partition), or erase the wrong partition. It's also possible it was a weird bug, but that's definitely not normal behavior.

OP, I wouldn't expect it to wipe out your Windows partition, but definitely have a backup just in case.

Can I use something like carbon copy cloner to make a backup of the WinXp partition and then just somehow copy the partition back in case ML should erase my WinXP (sorry, I've never make a backup of a partition before)?

I don't think you can use CC to backup a windows partition. Not sure though, don't use it.

But back to the original scenario... Upgrading to ML should leave all partitions alone except the "one" partition you're choosing to upgrade.

I forgot to mention: I also would still like to be able to boot into WinXP... hope that Mountain Lion will not touch that as well...

I just did a clean install of ML on a MBP running two partitions: one OS X Lion and one Windows 7. Erased the contents of the Lion partition and then did a clean install onto that partition and I can boot into both OSes just fine.

well win clone now you have to pay for it just like ccc wtf!

any ways... ummm

make a backup of xp and if you need to reinstall then do it, I know with bootcamp now you must give a 7 disk but before the install starts after the computer reboots go back to OSX and then unload the 7 disk then boot off the xp disk via starup disk or holding option at boot.

IF you lose windows.

I doubt it though.
