My friend just downgraded to Android, I told him to turn off iMessage on his iPhone and my iPhone has switched to sending as SMS instead of iMessage, however my iMac still sends as iMessage and takes a bit of time before it'll send as SMS.

Wondering if Apple has this sorted out for Yosemite, or if I'll just have to put up with the delay for the time being?

It's not much of a problem, I'm going to be using Telegram in place of iMessage for him anyway, just want to know for future reference.

If you have his Google email (and you have your own too), you can use Messages to communicate over the Google Talk protocol, which will arrive in his Hangouts app.

Thanks, but that's not quite what I'm asking.

When people switch from iPhone to Android, people who try to text them with their iPhone won't be able to because it'll go through iMessage, the person who made the switch needs to turn iMessage off from their iPhone so that other iPhone users don't get a problem.

So, I've told him to turn iMessage off, and it's working fine on my iPhone, but on Yosemite it's still trying to send as an iMessage before failing and sending as a regular text/SMS.

But like I said, it doesn't matter too much since we're using Telegram for messages now.

Haven't had an issue, so, some guessing:

Are contacts being synced between Mac and phone via iCloud?
Sending text message from Mac via other's e-mail address or phone number?
What does Mac's messages present for suggestions when addressing the message?
Or is this possibly an old on-going text thread you are reusing (maybe delete it and start fresh: the thread has "out-of-date contact info")?

Wondering if "default" for user is an e-mail address, and once failing, tries the phone number.

I've been talking on this thread for a long time now using their phone number, I just double checked that it is indeed their phone number, and saw it go from blue to green, so looks like the case is closed, Yosemite doesn't update contacts on whether or not they've turned iMessage off, you need to click their contact in the thread to get it to update.
