Friend Needs Photoshop for OSX 10.5.8

CS4 is the most recent version that will run if it's a PowerPC Mac (which presumably it is as 10.6 Snow Leopard is a vastly better OS for Intel Macs).

The older CS2 can be downloaded from Adobe for free - https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs2-product-downloads.html (sign in with a free Adobe account when prompted) - though be aware that as stated at the top of the page it's only technically "legal" if you have original discs for CS2 which can no longer be used because the activation servers are now offline. CS2 is a bit old for 10.5 Leopard but should work ok.

If it's Intel, perhaps your friend can go the legal route and sign up for Adobe's Creative Cloud. Can just choose Photoshop month-to-month.

You don't want CS2 if it's an Intel Mac as CS2 is PowerPC-only and will be slow on Intel - you should get at least CS3 if getting a second-hand copy.

CS3 to CS5 will work on 10.5 Leopard on an Intel Mac - however 10.6 Snow Leopard is not expensive (http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard) and is much better for Intel Macs than Leopard - CS5 and CS6 are supported on it, older versions (CS3, CS4) will probably work but you'd need to check. Depending on the MacBook and whether you want to run a newer version of OS X than Snow Leopard, you might be able to upgrade to a newer version than that and run later versions of Photoshop if you need to.

Yeah but I don't think he has the time to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.7. I recommended he upgrade to 10.6 and just get CS3.

You mean on the Creative Cloud? Sorta, yeah. He can get the Photographer Package, which includes Photoshop and Lightroom, for $10 a month.
