i was on my friends imac today, he has the same exact one as me, imac 24, 2.8, 2 gig ram, but heres the thing i have a Barracuda 7200.10 SATA 3.0Gb/s 500-GB Hard Drive, and he has a WD Caviar® SE16 HD, two different kinds of HD's same imac, he didnt change his HD, neither did i, both ordered from apple, never opened. which HD is better? is there a definate better one? his computer is quieter than mine, my fans are whirling faster cuz my desk is enclosed, his is open. is one of them more reliable than the other? faster?

also, the CD drive is different, he has a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A, and i have a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J, is one of them better than the other??

thanx alot, im just very curious!!!

*gasp*

Apple hardware is built from different OEM parts. There's no really predictable pattern of what you're going to get but some of it might be better then other "identically comparable" hardware.

i compared specs, the seagate seems to be better, but in terms of reliability, im not sure, i also believe the seagate is louder, but im clueless on the CD drives

*shrug*

Western Digital and Seagate are both good drive vendors.

In my personal preference I'd go with Panas... I mean Matsushita.

Seagate

I think that you did well with your Seagate drives anyway. I bought 4 of the Seagate 1 TB drives for my Mac Pro, and I find that they are really quiet.

It is commonly known (as mentioned above) that the same type of Mac can come with different internal parts, because Apple uses a variety of suppliers.

Is there anything else that you need to know?

well, according to the HD specs, the seagate is better, but im not sure which is more reliable, do you know? and i also found out that the seagate is louder

but i still dont know which is better, the matshita, or optiarc?

Why do you care? if it's not better you're going to take it back? tear open a $2000 computer and swap it yourself? Just enjoy it... People need to just enjoy what they have and not be hell bent on having the biggest baddest machine...

Just tell him you have the better one and let him prove otherwise. If either of you is obsessing to the point where it REALLY makes a difference, then you'll need to settle it with swords.

ok, i just have ONE question, which is more reliable, western digital, or seagate hd's??

The one that's still running when the other one fails.

Think about it for a second... if one was really superior to the other at the same price, do you really think Apple (or anyone else) would buy the inferior one? They're both good, and if you can't accept that, you'll never be happy, no matter what you buy. All it takes is a single careless worker having a bad day, you buy a drive on that day, and you'll swear for the rest of your life that this particular company makes crap.

If you want an ironclad guarantee, I guarantee your computer will be old in 6 months, and when you eventually replace it, you won't be happy with the replacement either.
