Went to the Apple Store today to get rid of some old apple devices I don't really used anymore and was planning to get a new ipad.

Just a quick note, I already had a 13 inch 2-in-1 windows PC already, the HP Spectre x360.

At the apple store and got the amounts I would get for my old apple devices and was debating on whether to get the 11 inch IPP or the Ipad mini. What I didn't realize is how big the 11 inch really was (but light). For my needs, it would be a bit of a overkill; however, would be nice to have. On to looking at the iPad mini. I had a iPad mini years ago and it was light, but this new iPad Mini felt lighter. Yes, the bezels on the top & bottom were a bit of a downer, compared to the IPP beside it; However, since I already had my big tablet (with a keyboard built in as well) in the spectre x360, it was the right iPad to complement it.

I decided buy the 256GB wifi+LTE Space Grey and I am not regretting it one bit. Everything looks great on this little guy and it is a joy to read e-books again. My old 9.7 inch ipad pro was a bit of a pain in the but to read on, especially when on the bus. For movies, it will be a lot easier to watch on this little guy than on my Spectre x360 on the bus.

Some may think it's going backwards going to the iPad Mini. However, for me, it's feels right and can't wait to use this more.

I cannot wait to hear about your experience over the week!

I very nearly went the same way, but in the end, as I take a lot of notes and felt like I still needed the real-estate, I went with the same-specced Air 3.

I still wonder if I should've gone with the Mini...

I did (almost) the same about a year ago. I had the 1st gen 12.9” IPP because I was enamored with the screen size at the time and thought I had to have it. I ultimately “down”graded to the iPad mini 5 and never looked back. This thing does everything you’d want a classic iPad to do - at the perfect size. I like to read in the park with my iPad and it really fits perfectly in my back pocket for the walk to/fro. You can’t do that with any other iPad.

iPad Mini 5 is fast too. I used it as my only iPad this past year in a Zagg Rugged keyboard case. Great experience; highly recommend it. I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Please give us a update on how you are going with the Mini.....

I was also very impressed with the Mini. I thought the display would be too small and text hard to read. But not so. It's so unbelievably feather light and perfect for travel (especially public transportation). Mini 5 64gb was it.

I'd read my local newspaper digital edition (downloaded before leaving home) on the train to and from work. At least I used to before the pandemic. Not too bulky while sitting next to other passengers, yet not too small for readability as with a mobile phone.

Congrats on the purchase. I'm on the cusp of trading in my 2018 9.7 iPad and Mini 4 and get a Mini 5. I really didn't use my Mini as an ereader until I applied a matte screen protector. That made a significant difference in the reading experience.

I have a Product (RED) smartcover for the Mini 4 and a Zagg keyboard case that I can continue to use with the Mini 5 (as well as the Apple Pencil). 64GB is a bit too small for me, and $599 is too high to justify the purchase... which is why I haven't done it yet.

I heavily use my 9.7" 2018 iPad w/Apple Pencil as a digital notebook. But that was a step up in size from the paper padfolio I used (1/2 letter size sheets, 5.5 x 8.5). That's nearly the size of the Mini. I bought an Adonit Dash 3 powered stylus for use with my Mini 4 to work on my digital notebooks when I don't want to carry the 9.7. It actually works pretty well. Obviously it would work even better on a Mini 5 w/Apple Pencil.

I'd have to re-design my digital notebook (I use GoodNotes) to better work with the smaller form factor, and it could end up being even better than on the larger iPad.

Played some monopoly (newer version) during lunch and was very smooth. No stutter in game from what I can tell. Easy to handle the mini in landscape mode as well.

finding that having the bezels can be advantageous in a small device like the mini.

Only thing I need to do is get LTE working. I have the Telus Peace of Mind Connect plan as I can add a tablet to my plan.

I had a 2018 12.9" 1TB iPad Pro that I sold on Craigslist today just because I didn't use it much at all in the year I owned it. I have a iPad Mini 4 that I also have barely used and figured, if and when I need an iPad, I still have that one. That 12.9" was huge and I was afraid to leave it lying around anywhere and break. It was so big that it never left the house.

12.9 inch ipad is definitely way too big for me. Heck, even the 9.7 inch was getting too big for what I was using the ipad nowadays, especially now that I had a 13inch 2-in-1 laptop.

I have a mini 5 and love it

only issue is it gets very uncomfortable to hold naked especially in portrait. It’s better in a case but then you lose a lot of the thinness which makes it attractive to use

It’s still a fantastic device for reading; I agree it’s the best iPad for a reading experience.

Just wish it was more comfortable to hold without a case, those chamfered edges do not feel great

I just bought the ipad mini 5 today too!

I also have the 2020 12.9 pro but i wanted a smaller device for meeting/work notes and sketching. Plus it’s a bonus that i got to get my old gen 1 apple pencil out of the closet again!

Look forward to seeing how i end up using it. I already find it being maybe the perfect size for reading comics.

I have found the mini great for comics and news articles and things with images, but for books i recommend the Kindle paperwhite. Best reading experience ive ever had.

I also got an ipad mini 5 a couple of months ago. I was about to sell it but i couldn't, I waited so long for apple to update the ipad mini and now I have it and not getting rid of it anytime soon. I have bought in the past all 9.7 iPads and also the pro but i was never confortable holding them or typing on them. They are just to big in my opinion. The current iPad mini is blazing fast and has the best pixel density than any ipad. I doubt you would see any power difference versus the pro especially if you dont do heavy video editing.
