My personal beef with modern iPhones is less about their size and more about their weight. When are they going to make iPhones with lighter materials?
The internals of phones are almost completely battery now, which is what makes the weight. The stainless on the X does make some difference, but the trend is to make smaller electronics with more battery. Battery density is directly correlated with the amount of power they can hold, so if anything weight will go up, not down.

Yeah, the jack was really an issue for some.

Personally, I was glad to see it go. I rarely use my phone for music as I have other devices and means and preferences for that. However, I understand why it bothered a lot of people.

That said, Apple has always done as it felt it needed or wanted to do. It's rare when they do what the customer wants. Apple is more into telling the customer what they want instead of hearing the customer.

In any case, you're correct in that decisions like this have been part of the makeup that's driven some of the polarization around here.
The headphone jack is still a huge issue for me. I went from an iPhone 7 to a Pixel 2 and now I'm using an iPhone 6s. I use the headphone jack daily and I'm not ready to move to Bluetooth yet. Having to remember to charge my phone and Apple Watch is enough, plus the quality just isn't there yet. I'd love to be able to use something like the AirPods but I hate any earbud type and can only wear the on-ear or over-ear.

It looks like going forward I'll be in the camp of using older iPhones or until I perceive Bluetooth headphones to be better. I've tried Android but Google's tracking is just too invasive for me so that rules out an Android device.

At least with the current line up of iPhones there's still some level of choice. But eventually there won't be any choice for me if they fully eliminate Touch ID and headphone ports across all of their iPhones.

Yeah, I understand.

Music, in and of itself, is a highly personal thing. Messing with that in any form was bound to cause Apple issues.

As you know, it will be Android for me this year. While I'm not a fan of Google's tracking, their services are what has keep my ancient Macs current with my more modern devices and Thinkpad.

I give Google as little data as I can, but they provide a useful service to me I am not yet prepared to surrender.

I agree, after all the iPhone is the product that allowed the masses to consolidate their phone and iPod to one device. But for me it's not just music, my job requires me to be available 24/7 for calls/email. And when I receive calls they are usually long calls so I always use headphones for those with my phone plugged in charging.

Google products/services are excellent but I think I'm finally at the point where I'm questioning what information I provide for free regardless of convenience. With the increased tracking across the web as a whole, I don't know what will be available in the future to be used against me. Currently my compromise is an iPhone with the Google apps I do still use. Certain Google apps just don't have good alternatives.

There’s no 5E, it’s actually SE. Also there’s no new 5 this year , but possibly an upgraded SE.

No more typing for me after 3 martinis. I meant to type 5 SE. And the spec about an upgraded "5" was because I didn't know what to call it. Hey, Apple, how about IP 5 SEX?

Hmm here is the way around... Coming from the 5S to the X... and it's so wow... Love the bigger size! Yes it's more heavy but I love this too! I still like the look of the 5 but the display is too small... at least for me.

Greetings,

Torty

Quote: I would definitely go down to a 4.5”-5” screen size in a SE body size of it had the same tech as the X. I bought the 10.5” iPad Pro so I can go with a smaller screen phone.[/QUOTE]

I would rather browse the web on my iPad than use a phone for that. I see the iPad as the main device, and would choose an iPhone SE to pair with it to take pictures, text, call people, get directions from a maps app, or make my own biking/hiking map using a gps app. I prefer small phone, and an iPad.

Right now, I just use an iPad mini 2 with LTE as my only personal device. Work gave me an iPad Air 2, but I only do work stuff on it.

I really want Apple to make an new iPad mini with up to date hardware!

I had my iPhone 5 that got broken and I went to get a new phone. I got an X and I was like... what ever. It was big, super expensive but I liked the camera.

Last night I needed a phone number and I grabbed my 5 again and wow!!!! it is so light!!!! so much technology in such small form. If the 5 had the camera of the X I would be all set. I may return the X today, I still in time to do it. Bulky, heavy buah.
Get the 8 or save money and get the 7. The X is overpriced. Guaranteed they will lower the X style next year to the 8 or 8 plus price. I like big screens so I opted for the plus. I’ve
Used the plus since the 6 Plus and love the battery. I don’t like the X. Can’t stand the notch
And the extra few hundred it costs when you factor in AppleCare and tax it’s still almost $300 more than the plus. Nearly $400 more than the 8 with Apple care and tax etc.

You think iPhone X style will go for 699 this year?

I’m doubting that. A price drop yeah but not that much

30% is bargain bin

From a form factor perspective, Steve Jobs had it right that 4” is the biggest size that’s still comfortable. I’d totally consider a smaller iPhone with the X design.

Actually, Steve Jobs was completely wrong about that. For some, yes, absolutely, but not for all. For you obviously, but not for me. Steve Jobs insistance on a small phone was what made me leave for Android. Only when Apple started making larger phones, did I come back. Choice is great, I'm all about multiple size phones in a line up, but absolute statements about the biggest comfortable size are completely false.

I assume they did some market research that said people like some weight. As an example the cheaper phone (8) uses aluminum but (x) uses steel. Same thing with their watches.

You guys are overthinking this too much. Most of the extra weight is in the glass back, which they had to use for both the X/8 for wireless charging.

The iPad air 2 was sold for 3years. Still is on the refurbished section on Apple's site. The SE will probably be the same, 3 years. So that means it isn't going to get updated till 2019.

Maybe, although iPhone is a much more popular, and - crucially - profitable product in Apple’s lineup.
