background info:
The only machine left in my house that isnt a Mac is my home Linux server.
It's an Intel Celeron 2.6Ghz, has a 250gig PATA drive in it, a gig of ram and a gig ethernet adapter.
It runs Fedora Core 5 Linux, and is used for:
DNS server (bind/named)
E-Mail server (sendmail)
IMAP server (dovecot)
Web server (apache)
SQL server (mySQL)
FTP server (vsftpd)
File server (samba)
My home network has a public routed Class C IP address range, the Linux server doesnt really have anything to do with it, except it manages the domain services for the network.
I'd like to either get rid of this machine completely (it's noisey, and gets hot, as it's sort of half in the office cupboard), or I'd like to replace it with a MAC MINI.
Some of the above services I could probably go without (FTP), but the others, I need. Perhaps I could put some of the services off site, or with a hosting company, unfortunately costs are high to do this, esp in Australia.
I could probably move my DNS services off the machine, and use my domain registrar's DNS hosting services.
First Question:
Will a Mac Mini running regular OS X Tiger do the above things? I know Tiger has 'named' on it for DNS, apache/php, mysql, can do samba, can do email (sendmail or postfix?) or do I need OS X server?
I would love to replace the PC for something much quieter, with less power consumption (mini is perfect)
I spose the main services required are email and web/sql/php
would be so nice to have all-mac machines (and a much quieter home office)
just for the heck of it, network diagram looks somewhat like this:
