i remember the stores. Mine looked like a farm if i remember correctly.

Oh man, there was one next to the mall that also had an Apple store. This was back in the PowerPC era. I remember the store being fairly cool, but seeing the computers in person really did no favors to the Gateway products. It's hard to want to buy a slightly-better-than-generic PC when the store next door is peddling iMac G4's and other super cool hardware.

Since then, though, the Apple Store people have become pretty insufferable.

Yep, there used to be one right by my house. I bought my first laptop from there. I think this was circa 2002. That was well before I discovered the wonderful world of Apple.
