Also, when I turn my speakers off or disconnect them, the sound does not start coming out through the internal speakers. Both of those things, however, work right in windows. If I set the sound output in preferences to internal speakers, then the internal speakers and front jack work, but then, of course, my speakers don't work. What setting should I be using?

you have to manually set it to internal whenever you switch from the front headphone jack to the back.

Ok, I understand and agree with the decision to make the sound not come out through the internal speaker when the externals are turned off, but its just stupid to not have the headphone jack work at all times.
