I have heard that Front Row has gone in Lion.

Is this true?

To be honest I didnt use Front Row much at all... but it was good for easily finding and showing photos.

Most people wouldn't want to have to set up all there videos again, setting up the PMS can be a pain.

Leaving out frontrow is a mistake imo they should of updated it.

What is there to set up? You select the folders you want to be in Plex and then the Media Server automatically scans them and puts metadata etc. Pretty much as simple as it could be.

I didn't say leaving Front Row out was a good thing but there are other options too.

Im gona download it now to try on my iMac to get prepared!

I agree with going with Plex - I've always used Front Row to manage my videos etc, but decided to give Plex a go seeing as I was going to need an alternative...

Should have made the move earlier - Plex is fantastic! So easy to use and the way the metadata gets added is brilliant - no more trying to remember what film is about and explain it to the other half!

Ive given it a go and for me its not so good for photos. Or maybe I am missing something here?...

People have set up their MetaData already they don't want to be doing that all again in Plex, most watch their stuff on an Apple TV now they have to mantain 2 libraries one for iTunes and one for Plex. It's just a huge hassle for most people would of been easier just to keep frontrow.

Videos bought from the ITMS wont play.

On a side note i much prefer XMBC over Plex. Soon XBMC (nightly build might do it already) will be able to read MP4 tags that will be a huge time saver for most.

Yeah I tried that. But I guess I prefer the clean layout of Front Row. Its too bad that it's gone in Lion , but I never really used it a lot anyway.

There's a Front Row skin for Plex which is nearly identical.

Plex pulls all the metadata for you. What has Apple TV got to do with FrontRow? I think you are confusing FR with iTunes. :p

Even when FrontRow was awesome (in Tiger) I quickly gave up on trying to have iTunes manage my videos. Plex is by far the nicer solution. And you can stream it to an Apple TV from an iPhone and iPad. Using the incredibly sexy Klexi client you can even download your videos to the iPad for watching on the go.

Plex wont replace frontrow.

I use frontrow now all my Tv shows and Movies are nicely tagged ect... i dont want to be doing it all again for Plex.

Slightly off topic Plex is lousy compared to XBMC. Wrong aspect ratios, audio out of sync issues, Less codec support.

I have over 5,000 TV shows and 300 movies meticulously tagged in iTunes, and it's far and away the easiest option for me. I record shows daily in EyeTV that I list in iTunes, including my wife's cooking shows. Plex doesn't know what to do with them and omits half of the episodes. I had one 22 episode season double-list half the episodes twice and leave out the other half, and after about 45 minutes I couldn't untangle it. I've tried version 8 and version 9, using external metadata and attempting to use just my personal metadata. iTunes has simply been much easier for manual tagging, and even if someone here has a recommendation for me to snap my fingers and fix it - and I'd love to hear it if you do!, Plex still can't play my iTunes purchased content.

Snow Leopard isn't going anywhere.

Which makes a even stronger point to get Plex! It will take care of everything for you. FrontRow (or even AppleTV for that matter) is a total piece of junk compared to Plex .
