I live a long way from everyone and am going just a bit mad trying to video-call them.

I have an old iPhone se, a 2019 mbp and a 2019 iPad Air.

Skype just does not work (I do not know why), Face time (apple only), WhatsApp no idea which on form App Store.

What video software can I safely use to call Windows, Android etc. people??

This is why FaceTime needs to be supported on other platforms. Apple could be taking a lead in these difficult times if they did so.

Facebook might bean option? They have a new PC\Mac dedicated Messenger client that does voice & video.

Zoom is probably my favorite of the options if you can't use FaceTime. Honestly, though, video conferencing is a collection of average to below average solutions with a myriad of compromises.
