Spotted in the Saturday, 29 July Fry's newspaper ad in the Los Angeles Times:

Refurbished 512Mb iPod shuffles for $39. No limit.

Tempting even just as a USB drive, although I guess it doesn't work as one unless iTunes is installed? Or is that not true? Mmmm, I've ignored the whole USB drive thing and never owned one to this point....

EDIT: BTW the 512MB refurb is $49 at Apple but comes with an armband or an external battery for free....

Shuffle's will work as a regular USB drive even on computer that don't have iTunes installed. I've even used mine on Linux computers with no problem.

Thats what I use my shuffle for, flash drive. No problems on PC, it sees it as a USB Mass Storage Device.

Apple is selling refurbished ipod shuffles with a free shuffle armband for 49.....and a refurbished nano with the free lanyard headphones for 169....sounds like 2 great deals to me. I might jump on the nano.

I saw that and actually went for the shuffle with armband. Sounded like a good deal to me.

Thank you! If I ever do get a USB drive, it'll definitely be a Shuffle!

The only thing that does bug me, and it's pretty minor, is that if you plug a Shuffle into a computer that does have iTunes installed, it'll open up and ask you if you want to relink your Shuffle with that library. Just have to click no and then close iTunes, but still it's a bit of a nuisance.

Wow, $39.99 is only £20 in our superior currency! (joke). I'm going on holiday to America next week. I hope i can find a Fry's in New York while i'm there for a few days. In the UK a 512MB Shuffle still costs £49.99 which is $93! Even a refurbished one is £39.99 which is $74.

@ San Marcos store we were sold out of refurb iPods by noon on saturday.. You ask how i know because i work in the store/dept. where we sell the iPods ..

I'm the Mac Guy in the dept.

The prices are no so far apart as you might think. In the US, sales taxes (approximately the same as UK VAT) are added at the point of sale. Not every state charges sales tax, but most do, in the range of 5-8%.

No, EVERYTHING in England is more expensive, considerably more expensive. I had breakfast which was eggs, toast and coffee and it was £11, I thought hmm that's a little pricy, then I did the conversion $25.00+ CDN (at the time)

I know. Perhaps I wasn't clear -- VAT and sales tax are essentially the same thing, not the same percentage. The point being, in the UK the price on the shelf is VAT inclusive, but in the US, sales tax is added at the point of sale. This often makes US prices look cheaper than they actually are in comparison.
