FTP access

Hey guys,

My father lives abroad and we were wondering if it is possible to access my mac as an ftp server from his home abraod on his mac.
Is this possible?
Is it a case of turning on FTP access in SYSTEM PREFS > SHARING and then using an FTP program?

Any help, tips or links would be great guys thanks.

I dunno much about FTP, but wouldnt a .Mac account let you do that?

You can enable remote login and use scp/sftp which would be more secure.

I am currently using just FTP (due to the program i wrote... Soon will try to get it to work with sftp). But yes, i would go with sFTP.

Set up both Mac's to have remote login enabled.

You login using your Mac users shortname.
[this is your username without spaces and lowercase, i.e. John Smith becomes johnsmith]

For example, let's say your username is is fred and your machine's external ip address is 123.123.123.123, you can SecureFTP from another machine by:

sftp dad@fred

and it'll prompt you for a password, and off you go like normal ftp but now it's encypted

So create an account for your dad on your machine and he can do the same for you...... or you can get access to each others accounts.

With this setup you can also use scp which I prefer, and use ssh to remotely login at the command prompt level....... and if you are feeling adventurous you can view each others screen by tunneling VNC over ssh but that's a whole different thing.
