The built in one is nowhere near good enough for my use, I need something I can create users and specify directory access etc. I am using Filezilla on a server that I am going to retire soon. Does anyone know of a good (free) ftp server for osx? Cheers!

Doesn't OSX come with a FTP server?

Just go to system preferences>sharing, select file sharing and click options

Since you can specify users and their access to folders in the plain-old Sharing prefpane, what else do you need?

The upgrade to Lion Server is only $50, and that gets you quite a bit. There are some shareware server variants out there, like CrushFTP, but even that's at least $30 I think. Or install pureftpd; there's a front end for that but don't know about Lion.
