Macrumors was quick to add to the FUD against Android when Oracle filed their lawsuit against Google over the Java language. Let's see if Oracle's severe blow before the case even goes to trial makes the front page :

So much for that particular piece of FUD.

Down from 132 claims to 3, with 8 prior art references as defense. The other 129 claims were dismissed with prejudice, which means they are long gone.

I'm not totally surprised. all companies throw a large net out hoping to ensnare them. The level of cut back is a bit surprised given the posturing that oracle had made before hand.

Actually, with only 3 patent claims left and Google entitled to keep 8 prior art references for invalidity before the jury, the deepness might not be as big as you think it is.

Oracle cannot stop Google from using/distributing Android. At most, they can tack on patent licensing costs. Push comes to shove, Android can move away from the patented technologies, and only damages would have to be paid out to Oracle.

But those licensing costs/damages just got a severe cut here. Of course, everyone who actually took a look at how Dalvik works vs the Oracle patents aren't too afraid at this point. This isn't about Android (the patent claims), only the Dalvik VM remember.
