Does that make the video fit the full screen? I have never messed with the video screen size on full screen DVDs. I just figured that it would give you the true aspect ratio. interesting. I will give it a try. Do you keep all the same Apple TV presets and just change the size? What I do is in handbrake i view dvd data to see what the pixel size is. So if your full screen movie is 640x480 in the picture settings change the width/height to 640x400. I found this to replicate what your DVD player would do for a full screen movie played on a widescreen monitor. You can do the same if the movie is 720x480 just make it 720x400.
Black Bars On The Side Are Always Going To Be There If The Source Is 4:3. So You Will Have To Get Used To It.
And some TVs will not let you use zoom modes with devices with output higher than 480p. Mainly older sets, but you may not be able to use them with your AppleTV if you have it configured to output at 720p or higher. However, most widescreen TVs have adjustments you can make to your liking. For example, my new Panasonic Plasma lets you view in 4:3, Full, Zoom, Just, and fill view. Many times, 4.3 content looks great in Just view since it only extends the very edges of the video content, and not the whole thing. The result is non-fat looking actors (as long as they are in the center of the screen, and a full image with no black bars.
Find these settings and experiment. Remember, every video source is different so you may have to use Just on some of them, and Fill on others. It all depends.
