does anyone know if the new XS Max will have full screen video (no black bars) even if partially cut off by notch. I watched a video of someone sampling it off and when it was full screen, it didn’t look zoomed in.

Anyone have an idea?

I don’t know this for fact, but with the new 19.5:9 aspect ratio, I’m almost certain there it will be letter boxed on the left and right in landscape. My hopes is that it won’t be on the top and bottom.

It'll play full screen (edge to edge), but you'll cut off content (top/bottom) depending on the aspect ratio of the content, just like the iPhone X.

Here's a quick lesson...
Your TV is 1.78:1 (standard 16:9 format). Any number higher on the first number, and you start getting a letterbox (black bars top/bottom on your TV). Most Hollywood content is somewhere around 2.35:1, which produces the black bars on your TV.

The display on the Xs Max is 2688x1242, or an aspect ratio of roughly 2.16:1 ... the iPhone X is 2.17:1, so expect Hollywood movies playing full width to have some minor letterboxing on the top/bottom, just like the iPhone X.

Thanks for the info. This is really disappointing. Was hoping to get a full non letterbox video like the 8 plus has. Shame.

Well it'll play full screen two different ways... letterbox left/right (screen fills top to bottom), and letterbox top/bottom (screen fills left to right). There's really no point being disappointed about it. You can't really avoid letterboxing these days since aspect ratio is not a standard, merely a creative decision.

I wouldn’t even mind watching the screen stretched out a little to fit it in. It just feels like I’m losing so much screen real estate because of it. That why I liked the 8 plus so much. I don’t get why the screen needs to be zoomed in though to get the stretch. I understand you’ll get cut off by the notch a little , but still annoying. It just drives me crazy. The NOTE does this as well. I know it’s not an iPhone thing. Oh well

You really won't be losing anything vs the 8 Plus in terms of size of your movie playback, and the true black of the AMOLED display will make it look exactly like your 8 Plus. In fact it'll arguably look nicer, with left and right deep black bars instead of 2 bezels.

The point having to choose to zoom is you have to be willing to lose a little bit of content. By default it will fill as much as it can use. If you zoom, you might lose nothing, or you might lose the top and bottom of a TV show, but you can get to true edge to edge if you really want.

The way most TV is shot these days, you probably won't notice it missing. But if you're watching live sports edge to edge, you will almost certainly crop off the score.

I want edge to edge with no zoom. No reason they can’t make that happen even if quailkty gets degraded a little. VLC player lets you change the aspect ratio to fit the screen size you’d like. It’s def possible with software if they would allow it.

There’s no chance Apple will let content be stretched or distorted just to fill the screen. That is pretty much guaranteed. Degrading content is not good for business.

Changing the aspect ratio would stretch or squash the content of the video. I’d much rather have a zoom that cuts off a little content than a stretch that makes everyone look like they’ve gained 50 lbs in an instant.

I have X and can stretch video in AirVideo to fill space around notch but can't do the same in VLC, any settings I need to try?
