I have purchased a Mac Pro 5.1 (2010), Quad Core, 2.8 Ghz after seeing in some sites (like OWC) that you can upgrade it to a 12-core, 3.46 Ghz with no problem. I have that tray from the same year.
When I tried, it did turn on and recognised it, but as soon as I started it, the fans went crazy loud!! I have tested it before the switch and everything went quite well.
Of course I've tried the SMC and PRAM resets, I have installed Mac Fans Control, but it did not do much when I set it up with the 12 core tray in. It seems that the MP got confused with the new tray, since it was quite cold and still with the fans at full speed.
Is there any way that I could have the fans running normal with this update? I'm running high sierra. I've tried all this with the full 128 GB RAM, should I try with less? Could that make any difference?
Thank you so very much in advance, guys, for any help you could give me....

As bsbeamer mentioned, an SMC version mismatch will cause the fans to go full speed. I think this is likely.

Another possibility is that the CPU temperature cannot be read, in which case the failsafe is to run the fans full speed. If you have monitoring software like iStat you can check for blank CPU temperatures.

I will get the IStat and try, Thanks!!

You likely bought the wrong tray...

The screenshot you're posting is NOT showing 3.46GHz processors & 128GB RAM. Please put that tray in and report again.
Here are some screenshots, I hope this help...I inserted the tray with less RAM this time.

As suspected, the tray part itself is incorrect. The SMC Versions do NOT match. System is 1.39f11 for MP5,1 part and tray is 1.39f5 for MP4,1 part. This cannot be fixed with updates. These must match natively.

Suggest you get a new tray. MP4,1>MP5,1 are not MP5,1 parts.

I've had a bad experience a year ago, when I inserted this very same tray into a MP 4.1 (2009)...it got overheated, fried!
Is this tray for a MP 4.1 (2009)? So what would be the tray that I need for this MP then?

Apart from tray mismatch, your PSU fan also not working correctly.

Besides, you shouldn't sell that tray until you fix the NorthBridge, otherwise, you have to sell it as faulty item. Which worth a lot less.

This screenshot is from my quad core...it does not look the PSU is not working properly. That fan got confused when I inserted the other tray.

How can I fix the NorthBridge on my tray?

Wow, 120 degree Northbridge.

How can I fix the NorthBridge on my tray?

The Northbridge rivets are made from plastic which seem to get brittle and crack over time. The thermal paste may also be dried out. The fix is to replace both.

This problem has happened to many, many people so there are many threads about fixing this (search for "northbridge" limited to the Mac Pro subforum). Here is a recent one:

I still encourage you to search for the other threads and look through them, you might find something else you like better. There are many options for a fix. AFAIK, nobody has ever found a 100% exact OEM-like replacement part for the rivets.

Guys, thanks so much for all the help!!!
One question: is it safe for me to insert 3 16 GB RAM modules to my MP 5.1 (2010) Quad Core? These modules are 1333 Mhz instead of 1066 (1066 Mhz is what was recommended)...

The short answer is yes.

And the long one?

Still need to have correct spec, e.g. you can’t mix UDIMM with RDIMM. Or, you should go for 2Rx4 memory but not anything else.

Anyway, for memory, please join this thread.

If you can't return your Dual 2009 CPU Board you should really inspect it.

1st thing is that the Northbridge Heat Sink ist not attached properly

To inspect and fix this you must take the processor heat sink(s) off - this is very delicate on a dual 4.1

And than pray that the guy who sold that has delidded the CPUs, if not it is a real gamble making the thing stable.

I'd have a ruf word with the seller, if he sold it as a 2010 tray youre in a good position.

Even if he sold it correctly as a 2009 Dual CPU Board it is faulty. The Northbridge Heat Sink had fallen off.
