Hi all

Just before Christmas i received my fully specced 14" Macbook Pro (M1 Max, 10 Core CPU, 32 Core GPU, 64GB memory) after waiting almost 3 months for it

I created a fresh install with the programs i like to use as i didn't want to bog it down with all the crap i'd gathered on my previous MBP

I will mostly use this laptop for Music Production (Ableton Live + Plug Ins), Video Editing (DaVinci Resolve) and work stuff (Outlook/Excel)

The first day i used it, i was in the office and the only program i had open was Outlook (sending/receiving emails). It wasn't plugged into power as i wanted to see how the battery performed. It was also connected to wifi. It used over 70% in less than 2 hours. Not what i was expecting, and thought it was maybe something to do with the fact it was my first battery cycle and needed "breaking in" so to speak.

So a few days later, i asked my friend to do a bit of a test with me. He got his new MBP same time as me and the spec is identical except his is 16" and mine is 14" (and yes i know the batteries last longer on the 16" but i thought it would be interesting to see how they compare).

Anyhow, we both charged to 100% then unplugged from power source, and started playing the same music video on youtube with same settings (70% brightness, 70% volume, no other programs running in the background). We then went out for the day.

When we go back around 5 hours later, my battery was dead and my friends was still going with over 60% battery remaining.

I charged mine and could see the battery had died 2.5 hours into the youtube video. This was also confirmed in the battery health statistics in the MBP settings. So my battery used 100% in 2.5 hours just from playing a Youtube video with nothing else on in the background.

My friends MBP eventually died a few hours later, so his lasted around 11 hours.

So i'm thinking that my battery is a dud and this doesn't work for me as i work remotely a lot and need to be able to use my laptop for a lot longer than this without it being plugged in. That's one of the reasons why i paid almost AU$6000 for this laptop as the batteries were supposed to be great. It states on the website that you should get up to 17 hours video playback and 11 hours web browsing.

Anyhow, i called Apple Support and they couldn't help and booked an appt for me at the Apple Store. I went into the Apple Store and they were pretty useless. They ran a very basic test which suggested the battery was fine. I wouldn't accept that, so i suggested that we switch my laptop on and watch how the battery performed over a short space of time, and it literally used about 10% in less than 15 minutes and the only thing i had open was a web browser.

So they agreed to replace it and i'm just waiting for the new one to arrive.

I'm keen to know if anyone else has had similar issues or has any insight into what could have happened? Obviously i'm hoping it's just a dodgy battery, but i can't be doing with another similar scenario as i'm back at work now and need a laptop that has better battery life.

TIA

Did you open activity monitor and go to the energy tab to see what's using so much power?

14" has 70 watt-hour battery vs 100 watt-hour on 16". Use a utility to show your CPU+GPU+RAM power consumption in watt. For example, if your workload uses 35 watt then 70Wh/35W=~2 hour (minus energy for display). YouTube playback can consume a lot of battery especially AV1 at higher resolutions if there's no hardware decoding.
