I had an iPhone 3G white 16GB with T-Mobile that had seen better days and took it to the Apple store and replaced it for $199 out-of-warranty. This was the last week of January.
New iPhone (3.1.2 OS) worked fine, until I got it home and ran Blackra1n. The baseband/wifi chip somehow was corrupted in the process and wifi was completely disabled. No way to unlock. (The AT&T SIM card I borrowed doesn't have a data plan). Took it back to the Apple store and they gave me another refurb. Found out if you buy the $199 replacement it comes with a 90 day warranty. This was first week of February.
2nd iPhone (also 3.1.2 OS) worked fine and Blackra1n unlocked with no problems. About a week later the screen started flickering and acting up. Did a restore/re-unlock to no avail. The screen flicker would come and go. Put up with it for about a month until yesterday, I had enough. Took the phone into the Apple store and they replaced it, no problemo. (3-17-10)
Get to my car and check Settings. OS 3.1.3. HAHAHA! If you need to get your iPhone replaced and you're on T-Mobile or another unofficial carrier I'd say hold off until an unlock is found. (Which will probably be never).
I know the GoPhone SIM won't work in my iPhone, so it looks like I'll have to cancel T-Mobile and hop back on the Death Star. Moral of the story: Patience is NOT a virtue!
