I had an iPhone 3G white 16GB with T-Mobile that had seen better days and took it to the Apple store and replaced it for $199 out-of-warranty. This was the last week of January.

New iPhone (3.1.2 OS) worked fine, until I got it home and ran Blackra1n. The baseband/wifi chip somehow was corrupted in the process and wifi was completely disabled. No way to unlock. (The AT&T SIM card I borrowed doesn't have a data plan). Took it back to the Apple store and they gave me another refurb. Found out if you buy the $199 replacement it comes with a 90 day warranty. This was first week of February.

2nd iPhone (also 3.1.2 OS) worked fine and Blackra1n unlocked with no problems. About a week later the screen started flickering and acting up. Did a restore/re-unlock to no avail. The screen flicker would come and go. Put up with it for about a month until yesterday, I had enough. Took the phone into the Apple store and they replaced it, no problemo. (3-17-10)

Get to my car and check Settings. OS 3.1.3. HAHAHA! If you need to get your iPhone replaced and you're on T-Mobile or another unofficial carrier I'd say hold off until an unlock is found. (Which will probably be never).

I know the GoPhone SIM won't work in my iPhone, so it looks like I'll have to cancel T-Mobile and hop back on the Death Star. Moral of the story: Patience is NOT a virtue!

If I were you, Id post around trying to find a user on ATT who doesnt jailbreak, and trade your new one for an older one

all of your problems can be fixed if you go to youtube and check them out. you didnt have to go to apple and exchange it

thats ok dude, use redsnow to jailbreak, DOUBLE CHECK with fuzzy band if you have 5.08 bootloader and try to downgrade your baseband, all is not lost my friend

I didn't want to open the phone myself and risk anything.

Serious? Wouldn't a refurb have the newer bootloader?

nope my story goes like this

iphone keeps crashing has new bootloader 6.04 filled with scratches and all

returned to apple, gave me a refurb, with bootloader 5.08

im now unlocked jailbroken and with a brand new back and screen and battery  lucky me

that blows, since you switched to AT&T, you could have gotten a 16GB 3G S for teh $199 you spent on an out-of-warranty repair.

It's a cat and mouse game...there will eventually be an unlock soon, but it sucks that you can't use the phone until then.

I'd trade, but I don't think OP'd really be up for it...

I have a Day 1 Black iPhone 3G running 3.0 jailbroken... but I have a few scratches and small cracks in the back and some scratches on the screen. Not bad. Actually if you use a case you'd probably never even notice. :)

Just putting the offer out there.

Okay I'm going to use Pwnagetool to jailbreak and then I'll see if Fuzzyband can help me! Fingers crossed! :)

i dont suggest pawnage,

use redsn0w that seems to be the most stable around, update cydia, restart, install fuzzyband and downgrade!! :D and good luck let us know how its going

My dad convinced me to dump T-Mobile and jump on his AT&T family plan. Man, this 3G is awesome! $45/mo bill now! Bahahaha!

very nice! haha family plans rock

Indeed! Best part is the AT&T rep said since I have a "pre-existing" iPhone I'm not under contract! I'll be eligible for the subsidized price of the new iPhone when it comes out! Yahtzee!
