How can I get back into the Mini and how do I download Mavericks back on it. Should I just download El Capitan to the startup drive (SSD)?

Not sure what you were trying to accomplish. If this is a 2014 mac mini then the hard drive is paired with a very small ssd to make a fusion drive. Better left as a fusion drive.

Anyway, make an appointment at the apple store genius bar and ask them to reconfigure your machine and reload the operating system of your choice.

This is a 2012 MIni I just bought used with a 512 840 Pro SSD. I just finished successfully figuring out how to online restore Mavericks after separating the drives via Terminal. Right now Disk Utility is taking it's ≈ 2 hours to write zeros to the 1 TB HDD to map all bad blocks.

Conscensus with SSD's seems to be that you DO NOT write zeros to it (for bad sector mapping OR erasing). It seems Disk Utility won't do this for SSD's anyway. Tomorrow I'll work on deleting old apps from my late 2006 iMac before migrating it to the Mini.
Oh and my two 24" Dell U2415's arrive from Amazon tomorrow. Woo Hoo, the Mini gets REAL eyes!
