I recently got a 2017 21.5" iMac with a 1TB Fusion Drive and so far the performance has been pretty good, however in the future I plan to upgrade this to an SSD-only configuration. I have a few questions and was hoping people might know the answer to:

- From what I understand, the "Fusion Drive" isn't a single module but instead an NVMe blade SSD working in tandem with a standard 1TB SATA hard drive. Is it possible to operate the iMac with just the NVMe SSD while leaving the SATA bay empty/vice-versa? (provided I reinstall MacOS from scratch and reconfigure from Disk Utility after the change)
- On the contrary, is it also possible to replace the NVMe SSD with a larger capacity SSD and then split it from the SATA bay so that the OS and everything is run off the faster NVMe drive while the SATA bay is used as a secondary storage device?
- Will performing any of these changes void my warranty?

Opening the iMac voids your warranty. You can replace the original SSD with one that has a larger capacity. You can get them up to 2TB. You can remove the HDD or replace it with a SATA SSD. You can get them up to 4TB. The two SSD units would be independent drives...not some sort of fusion.

There are lots of videos on Youtube about how to open iMacs, what tools you need......etc.
