Fusion Drives

Does anyone know the actual specs of the fusion drives? I just returned the 21.5” 3.4 ghz 2017 imac to Best Buy with 1 tb fusion drive. There was some issues with that computer for sure, was not running right. They had the 27” iMac on display - it did run a bit faster, better. But I don’t know if with store specs if it is going to work.

So my question is what is the rpm of the 1 tb fusion drives? Is there any differences between the 1tb fusion in the 21” vs 27”? I have searched online a lot to see about this, but not finding the answer.

The spinner part of all fusion drives is 5400 rpm. In other words slow. When the fusion drive first came out the SSD part was larger.
So my old 2012 21” iMac has a 1 TB fusion drive with a 128gb SSD. The newer ones have a 64gb SSD.
In other words your going to see a lot more use of the spinner part of the drive.

As for why the 27” seemed faster in store, you’d need to see the specs of both machines side by side and make sure you were doing the same activities to see a fair comparison.

actually the newer ones only have 32 gb ssd.... I just found one website that said 5400 too. The 2700 was 3.5 compared to 3.4 ghz and it does have a better gpu which would make a difference.

Well the only way I will get an iMac is thru the Apple Store - without the fusion. I thought I saw someone say that the 27” had 7200 with the 1 tb fusion....

Whichever iMac interests you go pure SSD. Fusion, like Seagate's SSHD, was a stop gap measure. All 27" iMacs come with a 7200rpm if you go Fusion. The 21.5" iMac is hobbled by that 5400rpm laptop style drive.

27-inch iMac systems with Fusion Drive all have a 7200-rpm hard drive combined with either a 32 GB SSD (for the 1 TB Fusion Drive) or a larger 128 GB SSD (for the 2 TB or 3 TB Fusion Drives). The 21.5-inch iMac you bought is almost identical in configuration to the base 27-inch iMac except with regard to the GPU. Note the 1 TB Fusion Drive on 2015 iMacs came with a smaller 24 GB SSD.

I don't know whether the 21.5-inch iMacs has a 5400-rpm hard drive when purchased in a Fusion Drive configuration, but hopefully someone else can confirm this by going to  (hold down ⌥) > System Information... > SATA/SATA Express. It lists the rotational speed in this section.

We already know that you've had problems with the 1tb fusion drive, so...

... Save yourself a lot of grief, and THIS TIME, order up a 27" iMac with a "straight SSD" inside (instead of fusion).

No, the drive isn't as large as a fusion drive, BUT...
It will run faster and keep running fast throughout the life of the computer.

If you need "more room", just plug in a 2.5" USB3 drive.

Important info to know:
You CANNOT BUY an SSD-equipped iMac at the Apple Stores or at most Apple resellers.
They MUST be special-ordered through Apple's "build to order" page at the online store.
Not really a problem, just takes a few days more to get one.
If you wish, you can order online and then "pick up" at the local Apple Store.

The 256gb SSD adds $100 to the buy-in price.
It will be the best money you EVER spend on "a computer"...!

I was just checking to make sure about the fusion drives... Best Buy has a good deal on the 3.5 ghz, 27" (2017). I know the internal ssd is also faster than an external ssd boot drive.

Right now, I am playing the waiting game... I am using my iPad Pro as my computer. Found some keyboard shortcuts which make reading email easier. I got a wireless hard drive as well, set that up today.

I even did some designing today on my iPP

An iPad Pro is not a computer. And if an iPad does everything you need, then don't buy one either.

I have been using it for awhile as my computer - working great... other than today it is discharging while plugged in....
