Future Hard Drive replacement services

Can I safely assume that maybe next year sometime some of these iPod battery/HD replacement companies will be doing the same for the Air?

I'd love to buy just the basic 80 GB model and maybe have a 128GB SSD someday.

I know I wouldn't be able to do it myself. I cant even get my 4G iPod open without breaking the tools they sold me on eBay with the battery.

Yes, when someone hand you a hammer and tells you to go pound nails ... and you come back with a broken hammer.

Paying somebody to do the job might be a little safer for those around you.

You can safely assume that. Opening the Macbook Air also looks far easier than an ipod or iPhone.

I opened up my air. 10 screws and you have complete access to the hard drive, heatsink, battery, etc. How hard can that be?

Did you try removing the Hard Drive?
It is a little more complicated than it looks and should only be done by someone with experience working inside laptops with a good set of instructions.

removing the hard drive is a little bit more complicated. Obviously a kid shouldn't be messing around with this stuff but if your patient, you should be able to do it yourself w/o any problems.

yes, I agree that it shouldn't be too hard. One challenge will be finding the replacement that fits correctly and has the correct connector, both non standard.

Thanks for the advice guys. I am about 95% sold on the AIR now. It would be my primary computer all summer in China. Some wi fi around, but not as much as the US it seems. I have a favorite coffee shop I frequent that has a NICE network. Probably the fastest I have experienced in China in the 20 or so hotels I have frequented in my travels. I will be doing some writing mostly on the AIR and web surfing. Probably just go ahead and buy the USB adaptor.

Just love the feel of the AIR, but it is hard to separate myself from multiple inputs and a DVD drive! Really sort of had misgivings before I played around with one. I know I will miss my iMac . . .

I thought I'd miss the optical too but found not so in the least. My Air I originally bought as a travel only companion has quickly become my only machine.

HD and Battery are easy user replaceable parts if you're of steady hand and have a bit of common sense.

Awesome! I think you have sold me. I will order a 1.8 GHZ 80 GB in May. Should do me well for a while.
