Future of Back to My Mac?

Now that Apple has (sadly) discontinued AirPort and Time Capsule routers/NAS, do you think Back to My Mac is on the chopping block next? BTMM allowed you to connect to your Airport or Timecapsule anywhere in the world, and showed the same on Finder as if it were a local disk.

BTMM has never had an app or ability to be used in iOS, not even for Remote Sharing (VNC). Thoughts on its future?

(Full disclosure: I'm debating replace my Wireless N TC with a AC TC and debating if it is worth it based on continued support for Apple's BTMM service).

I think the lack of native VNC/BTMM on iOS speaks volumes on the future of this service. It has pretty much been left alone and not improved in many years.

I love my time capsule, but honestly with apple discontinuing the line I wouldn't buy one anymore. Apple's airport/TC is gen one AC wifi, gen two AC (mostly faster due to MIMO feature) is already available in several routers in the same price range

Several AX (draft spec) routers are suppose to come out this year, and there is a new security spec (ACS v3?) that was just approved that I think will come out with those routers as well, along with mesh network systems for those who need multiple routers to cover a large area. All of these advancements will leave the apple routers behind as they are no longer officially updated with new models.

Of course, for those of us who already have the AC wifi Time Capsule, it's not worth replacing for these new security/ax wifi until they become much more available and the price drops. (I am not looking forward to playing router roulette for compatiblilty when I upgrade my router next time, apple's routers were fantastic.)

Thanks for your input! I'm definitely aware of AX spec, but I am not wanting to be a gen0 tester of it. I am thinking I may milk 4-5 years out of AC before switching one the dust settles on the new specs, as I have no need for mesh (use cat5e for my gaming PC and I am in a small space currently for wifi).

Good points on Back to my Mac. It would be a great shame if they got rid of it, as its a nifty old school Apple feature, but all of those nifty features seem to be going the wayside.

Good point. Although I do think its stagnation to OS X only is concerning. It would be amazing if they released an iOS app that allowed easy to use VNC to a home Mac.
