Hi,

I have noticed that I use my iPad Pro as my main device while at home. I use it with the Magic Keyboard and Smart Pencil. I rarely need my MacBook Pro (which is connected to an external monitor, the LG Ultrafine).

Apple has said time and time again that they are not merging iPadOS and MacOS. However, with Mac now running on ARM and the design language between the two systems are getting closer. I am curious what people thing Apple’s ultimate goal is with the device?

Do you think there will be proper external monitor support or allow MacOS on a higher end iPad Pro in the future? Curious what others think.

Apple is focusing on bring iOS/iPad Pro apps to MacOS rather than the reverse. With the introduction of ARM, Apple may wait and see how they can optimize some of their 1st part apps with ARM. (Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, Xcode).

Some believe that there will be a merging of the portable devices (iPad Pro and MacBooks) to some extent but personally I think Apple is going to keep both product lines and have inherent feature differences born out of the hardware differences. The similar base architecture will promote software development leveraging the hardware in each product line to bolster sales of multiple devices in a cohesive ecosystem. Software developers will probably benefit from being able to add features to certain platforms while maintaining cross platform compatibility.

So MacOS apps on an iPad, doubtful, but certainly more feature rich apps and the chance to run mobile apps on MacOS for a seamless experience.

Let me give a prediction base on a recent leak.... Apple is internally testing desktop mode on iphone and ipad.... That means that once you dock to a monitor you can run MacOS.... They are not going to merge the 2, but they will allow to run MacOS on some higher-end Ipads/Iphones (probably new ones still to come, with more RAM), when docked to (their?) monitors. Which make sense, since Mac apps tend to have a different aspect ratio...
This will be big, and something nobody can compete with... (Samsung Dex does not have desktop apps...)

From a business standpoint, merging the 2 lines doesn’t make sense. People are more likely to buy more Apple devices, meaning more money for Apple, if they keep both the iPad and Macbook lines.

Any sources for this? I don’t recall any such rumours, but that’s not to say I haven’t missed them.

iPads will remain tablets and will have some similarities with the laptops but that’s about it. It will probably be easier in the future to make apps for both platforms.

They will remain tablets as iphones will remain smartphones, but docking to macos will be a big selling point... Dex is already a selling point on Android, this will be a much bigger one...

I’ll believe it when I see it. While cool in concept I’m not so sure about the day to day in real life.
