Hey guys,

So here is my dilemma. I currently own a PS3 that can stream music, Netflix, Hulu Plus, and movies from iTunes, although it is a bit of a choppy process. I am thinking about purchasing an ATV but don't really know if it's worth it all for a simpler process. With that said, has there been anything said about the future of Apple TV in regards to Apps being released for it, maybe an ATV app store perhaps? What other future plans are rumored to be coming to the ATV? Thanks guys!

RE: Future plans for Apple TV

My time machine is on the fritz this week so I can't help you there. Apple doesn't announce anything before they're ready to release it. If you want an Apple TV now, then buy it now. No telling what will arrive in the future. Chances are, however, other than software updates, there won't be a hardware update for at least a year. Or maybe there will be one.

And Apple Store employees are kept in the dark too. Apple wants them pushing current products, not making customers hold off and think about the next versions. :) You have to refer to Mac online/print sources for the rumors.

I also have a PS3 and when I bought the Atv I also wondered if it would be worth it. 100% pleased with my purchase. It's just a much nicer interface. It's a perfect TV companion. I think we'll get an app store next year. I think it's a wise purchase for 100$ even for PS3 owners. I'm thrilled with mine!

Exactly the same situation for me. I didn't really like the way that the PS3 and even 360 streamed content, so I decided to give ATV a shot, and it was well worth it. And now with Airplay, it makes it even better.

The experience is just that much better, especially if most/all of your content is in iTunes already.

For 99 dollars, its quite a good deal. For me, an iTunes based person, at 99 doesn't have to make a tough sell.

GoogleTV, since it isn't tied into iTunes, has a tougher time to make a sale to me. Where I do have a PS3 to stream Hulu Plus/Netflix, that won't be a great job with iTunes content(more so for protected iTunes content, which while annoying, is a reality of mine). GoogleTV has app coming, which are very cool, but I'd be hard pressed to buy a 300 dollar box for that. Maybe when I need to pick up a new HDTV, since Sony's model's are hugely overpriced. I do love the idea of Google searching through TV listings!

And this is why the :apple:tv was such an easy decision for me. I had the majority of my daughter's movies already saved in iTunes for my nano, in case she ever got bored when we were out and about.

Since then, I've HandBraked virtually everything in her movie collection. She would now rather watch her movies via :apple:tv than via DVD, even though I had converted many of the movies with less resolution in order to reduce file size and the artifacts are occasionally quite visible.
