I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere - what's the cap speed of the edge network in the future?

Could we see speeds approaching 3G over the next couple of years assuming the network is capable? Or is this dinosaur technology that we're stuck with? I've been staring at this unopened iphone box and this is the big hang up point for me...

Well considering the recent EDGE pgare brought speeds to nearly 200kbps and the limits are "data speeds up to 236.8 kbit/s for 4 timeslots (theoretical maximum is 473.6 kbit/s for 8 timeslots" wikipedia. I don't think we will see much more speed out of edge.
