I'm most likely going to buy the 2.2Ghz MBP very soon, with only the 160GB hard drive upgrade. My question is:

In several years, once my warranty is long expired and (theoretically) large hybrid hard drives are commonplace, will I be able to pop one of those in the MBP and get all the benefits? What about a SSD?

Hybrid hard drives are already available at 160GB. I'd be more interested in a SSD, but yes, you'll be able to pop them in.

First off, dont get the 2.2 ghz, if you plan to have your mac around for "a couple years" you'll want the beefier specs of the 2.4 ghz. Also, hybrid hardrives will not work with OSX (the OS wont be able to take advantage of it), I mean the drive might work, but I doubt you will see a speed imrovment. SSD though will be HUGE (that is what I am waiting for as a BTO as my Powerbook still has a year of life in it). But just so you know, if you take your laptop to any Authorized repair center and give them the hardrive to replace, it will not void the warranty.

A couple years isn't going to make much difference between 2.2 GHz and 2.4 GHz. Go ahead and get the cheaper model and save that $500 for SSD storage in a year or two. That will make a HUGE difference.

The MacFixIt guides are great for figuring out how to take apart your computer. With just a few tools you can do the replacement yourself.

I am not sure there's any benefits to hybrid drives if the OS is unable to take advantage of it. So far, I haven't heard of any "out of this world" performance increases with hybrid drives. Personally, I am more interested in solid state drives, and I think in a few years the storage size will increase significantly, and the cost will go down.

Thanks guys! I think I'm definitely going to go for the 2.2 (I'm a poor college student). I guess I'll be waiting patiently for SSD!

Quoting my post from another thread:

"bumped into my old boss today that has dealing with Apple on a corporate level and his comments about my purchase of a new MBP.... "surprised you didnt wait for the solid state release at WWDC".

Make of that what you will...."
