The old B&W G3 works fine for most things (no gaming, editing, etc..) but music/video, etc is changing the landscape and I need/want something newer/faster. A MB or MBP would be nice. An Intel Imac would be a no brainer and good for a few years (but I don't like the one piece form). And a mini G4 would probably be adequate now. But where is that line between adequate today, not enough next year? What is the real difference between the older G4 and G5? How fast a bus is needed for what's on the horizon? Thanks.

Futureproofing v. $$

Don't even bother with a G4 of any kind if you want to futureproof yourself. Either get a speedy g5 or go Intel (Intel is the most future proof).
If you're happy with your current monitor I'd go for a mini. It may only be "adequate" for less time than more expensive options, but it'll cost so much less that you'll be able to afford to upgrade when you want to and the mini's small form factor makes it future-proof for a very long time as it has so many potential little uses.
General I feel futureproofing is dangerous, because it's often cheaper and faster to buy a basic computer every two years than an amazing computer every 3-4.
In the case of the mini though, an intel mini is what, $200 more, than a first gen g4, and dramatically better. I'd go intel.
