Anyone seeing this? I have a never-been-hacked gen 1 iPhone running the 2.0 FW. I've had to do a complete restore of my iPhone 4 times (via the forced restore method).

I regularly get "Application ... not installed because an unknown error occurred (0xE8000013)." message.

The application identified is not consistent so I don't think its a specific app. If I restart the sync, the identified application installs ok.

From searching the web, this alarm appears to have been common for people with hacked iPhones installing the firmware...but I haven't found any references regarding the 2.0 firmware.

2.0.1 - still exists...

All other iPhone bugs I've dealt with appear to be resolved with 2.0.1, but my sync'ing still has a a few issues:

1) During app installation, the last app installed will always fail with error 0xE8000013. During the next sync, the app will install fine. Hard to narrow down with how long installs take, but it is not app specific.

2) The "check for app updates" function is really odd - when an update is available, iTunes shows multiple copies of the same version of the app (e.g. the iTunes screen shows 6 AIM updates of the same version available for download).

The two problems might be related, but it takes too long to experiment with it...

I guess I'm the only one seeing this:(

Same thing happens to me. I always randomly will have at least one app that doesn't sync properly almost everytime I do a sync in itunes. It happens every time an app gets updated through itunes, and it also will happen to just any random app even if I hadn't done an update.

I also have the issue where it will show that I have an update available, and then it will show like ten updates that I already have, plus each app will show up multiple times. If I hit update all, it still downloads each one of these updates, so it literally downloads updates I already have like ten times which leaves me with a ton of duplicate app files in my mobile apps folder.

This is so annoying because syncing takes so damn long. If it didn't take so long to just sync things I wouldn't really mind. I really hope Apple gets these things fixed, everything is so buggy with this new firmware and app store, its ridiculous.

I've been trying to figure this out and (for now) have been thinking the iTunes "update now" issue is related to the 0xE8000013. If you look at your apps directory on the hard drive (control-click on an app in iTunes and select "show in Finder" to get to the directory), you'll find several copies of the same program so what iTunes is reporting is physically present on the hard drive - its trying to update all the duplicate copies of the app (it indexes the duplicate files so you'll find "AIM", "AIM - 1", etc... despite only one icon for the app being present in the main apps list.)

Don't manually delete the duplicate contents in the directory though - you'll really screw up the iTunes database by manually deleting the apps.

If anyone finds a solution, please post it here. I'm continuing to play with it to try to figure out the underlying issue and will post anything useful I come up with.

Hate to say it but the recent iPhone experience feels more like fighting with a Microsoft product than a typical Apple product... Having had a Mac since '84, I can't remember a product release as buggy as this. There's been some crap, but I can't remember anything this high profile being this screwed up.

Worked for me: delete on phone, restart, delete from phone AGAIN

I've been hassled by this for days. Finally without much optimism I decided to delete the apps on the phone and restart it. I really didn't want to erase and restore!

When I restarted the phone, one of the apps I'd deleted was still there!

I deleted it again, and all three problem apps updated successfully.

I did a clean wipe of my iPhone 3G and on its first sync, I got hit with this error when it was trying to install all my apps. These random, ominous messages are really frustrating.

Sometimes makes you wish of the good old 1.0 days. ;)

Short version (looking at the post its pretty ugly)

** 0xE8000013 appears to be unrelated to the issue where "update apps" reports multiple copies of the same app.

** 0xE8000013 has not been shown to cause other iPhone issues and apps install fine on the next sync

** Process found to correct "update apps" multiple copy issue without causing additional iTunes/iPhone damage. Problem is caused by multiple copies of the same app within iTunes:

* Delete the app from your iPhone using iTunes
* Delete the app from iTunes using "Control click -> delete" in the apps window of iTunes
* Go to the apps folder on the hard drive and delete all the remaining copies of the app
* Redownload the app
* Reinstall the app on your iPhone.

My detailed, rambling version:

Other problems on the iPhone resulted in a replacement by Apple (thanks Genius bar!)
Deleted iTunes (and all associated folders keeping the music, movies, and tv shows)
Downloaded and installed iTunes
Rebuilt my entire iTunes music and video library. Takes forever, but I wanted to start clean.
Redownloaded all apps.
Installed apps 2 at a time.

I still got the 0xE8000013 error once when I installed Jott. Jott installed fine on the next sync. After past testing, I don't think the error is related to Jott - I think Jott was the unfortunate victim. That's the only time I've seen the error so far after probably 20 sync's.

Have had very few sync problems since the new iPhone and rebuilt iTunes library. Previous, I'd get the 0xE8000013 error almost every app install. The Genius bar didn't seem to know about the 0xE8000013 error.

Reason for the new iPhone:

I couldn't get a stable set of apps (even with only Remote and Enigmo). An app would crash and all other apps would be effected. Deleting and reinstalling would not fix the problems. A complete forced restore (not backup restore - firmware restore setting up iPhone from scratch) was the only way to get the apps working again only to have them start to fail in a seemingly random manner.

Theory was my flash was bad... I guess I never noticed it (or it recently failed) during the 1.0 days since that memory was taken by music (there were a few songs out of the thousand or so that wouldn't play...wrote it off as a problem with the mp3 and would delete the song).

I've had a small number of app crashes since, but the iPhone always recovers now unlike before when it would quickly turn into a paperweight.

Good luck.
