I have a newertech ministack external fw hd that I boot from. in disk utility is says "Not Supported" uner smart status info.

is this normal? my mini's internal drive now also says not supported but then i'm not booted from it if that makes a difference..

i'm lost as to whether this is normal or if I have an issue to fix. its my first fw hd.

When I check the smart status of my external HD, it says "not supported". If the hard drive doesn't seem to have any ill effects, I wouldn't worry about it.

SMART is an IDE technology and only works over the IDE bus. Even though you are using an IDE drive you cannot use SMART over FireWire.

I you really need S.M.A.R.T. for a FireWire drive, Granite Digital make some enclosures that display the status on a front panel. They are not cheap.
