So today, my Newertech guardian maximus arrived from OWC. 500 gigabytes of RAID1 goodness. I plugged it into my iMac's FW800 port, and started copying over some stuff. Started off with a 1 gig file from my iMac's HD to the maximus. And it was slow as hell. The progress bar was slowly moving, and it said something like 10 minutes left to copy. Which is rediculous.
So, I decided to turn off my Acomdata drive I have plugged into my FW400 port. Tried the transfer again, and it was done in a matter of seconds, like how it should be. I turned the Acomdata on again, did the copy, and it was just as slow again. Rebooted just in case, tried again, same thing. Oh, and I tried copying the same file to my Acomdata drive and it was slow. So as long as both drives are connected, my entire Firewire bus slows to a crawl
So, I then decided to see what would happen if I daisy chain on my FW400 port. I plugged the Maximus into the Acomdata's port, and the Acomdata was plugged into the iMac. And.....it's fine. Transfer speeds are a little bit slower than they were on working 800, but they seem perfectly normal for Firewire 400.
While I'm glad I'm not at parallel port speeds anymore, I bought a FW800 drive for the increased transfer speed. And I need to use both drives at the same time. So what's wrong here? Is this a known issue with the iMacs or something? It's pretty crappy I can't use both my Firewire ports at the same time.
