FYI: Price Mistake on the iMac (At Apple Edu)

Just was at Apple's Education web page and there seems to be a price mistake. If you select the 17" iMac, you can add an additional 512MB of memory for no additional cost.

In case anyone's thinking about a 17" iMac, this could be enough to push you that direction. Assuming you act fast enough .

Still works for me -- even after adding to cart and beginning checkout. But I really don't need one, so I cancelled the order. I suspect the oversight would be caught eventually, before the thing actually shipped anyway.

Yeah, I'm sure they'll catch the mistake. I'd just guess they'd let the order slide. It's not that *big* of a mistake. Weighing the pissed off customers vs getting an extra $70 or whatever, I'm guessing they'd ship it. It's not like they don't overcharge on memory as it is.

Well maybe it's not a mistake. I was certainly surprised to see it and took advantage of it. I sat and continuously pressed the refresh button waiting for the web store to reopen this afternoon after hearing about the iMac update. Well I'm happy to say that a 17" will be on its way within 7-10 business days. I can't wait, these new iMacs sound awesome!

Gee, Apple. Thanks for letting me know you are billing me $100 more.

This is something I could fight and win with Amex anyway, but I'll just give them a call today and sort this out.

Which is fine, I understand it was a mistake. But I should have been informed, because the updated total put my Apple credit account over the limit, which could have been a bad thing. I'll just have to redo the order with lower specs

In order to assure my order didn't get delayed I just told the guy when I called (I waited 32 minutes to talk to someone on hold! I told the guy I could have gone out and bought a car in the time I was on hold) to just downgrade the memory from 1GB to 512MB. It didn't matter really, seeing as I still have a 512 chip from my other iMac that I took out when I upgraded it to 2GB.

At first, he didn't even understand how my confirmation e-mail said $1,404 and his record was saying $1,501. But I had a hunch (the memory)-told him, and he sorted it out. It took 45 minutes on the phone, but what the hell.

i dont think you can use the ram from your old iMac in the new iMac... DDR and DDR2 dont mix...

As evidence shows, they catch their mistake and fix it. Since they don't usually bill you until your computer ships (beyond placing a hold, which can be for more than the purchase price), it all works out. At any rate, they aren't responsible for technical glitches or pricing errors. All online stores have these sorts of disclaimers for this very reason.

So as far as fighting with a credit card company over it, you're probably not going to win unless you have an invoice that shows the lower total (not the one you get 30 seconds after placing the order, but the one you get with completion of the order). If you get lucky, Apple won't catch it in time.
