Subject: FYI - Running MP7,1 with 384GB. NEMIX RAM and absolutely no issues found.

My Hardware
  • 3.2GHz 16‑core
  • 384GB (12x32GB) of NEMIX R-DIMMs DDR4 ECC memory
  • Radeon Pro Vega II
  • 1TB SSD storage
  • Afterburner
  • Stainless steel frame with wheels
  • J2i with 1x 8TB and 1x 16TB HDD
  • Sonnet/Samsung 970 EVO Plus blades; 2TB, 3x 1TB setup as 1TB for boot clone and 4x 1TB RAID-0
  • Apple 27" Thunderbolt 1 display connected via USB-C > TB2 adapter using USB-C port on Vega II
  • 65" LG OLED 4K TV connected via Vega II's HDMI port

  • I bought the NEMIX RAM from Amazon at a cost of some $1,500 (early on before prices started to increase).
  • I 'torture' tested my stock MP7,1 with just the 4x 8GB RAM for two days and all was well.
  • I upgraded Catalina 10.15.2 to 10.15.3.
  • I cloned 10.15.3 to my OWC Mercury Envoy Pro portable 1TB SSD and booted up on it to install Apple 10.15.4 latest beta build.
  • I then installed the NEMIX 12x 32GB RAM and ran various memory tests and Prime95 for several days on the internal 1TB Apple SSD with 10.15.3 build 19D76. No issues encountered.
  • Have installed Adobe Premiere Pro 2020, latest FCPX, DaVinci Resolve and a number of other editing software packages.
  • Have connected MP7,1 to my late 2016 15" rMBP13,3 using Cat7 and a Promise SANLink 3 10G adapter for file transfers (self assigned IPs). My MBP has all my mass storage units connected such as Promise Pegasus R4, R6, OWC TB4mini 4x 5TB encloses, OWC Mercury Envoy Pro SSD, and so on. Thus can transfer needed files from MBP to MP7,1 via 10G at around 500 MB/s.
  • When I setup my MP7,1 I did not setup my Apple ID nor selected to have any of the bundled features enabled such as Siri, and Locations. I simply did not want my MP7,1 burdened with all the stuff that Apple ID sign-in brings along with it.
  • Have run several simple 4K, 6K and 8K editing projects that I had archived and all went well.
  • I enabled Time Machine but execute it manually when needed.
  • I have installed DriveDx to monitor disks & SSD units and all of its displayed data showed things as AOK.
  • I installed TG Pro to manage all 4 fan speeds. I ramped the speeds up to max just to hear what the max RPM sounded like. Noise level went from ~zero to a pleasing subsonic wind-tunnel-like sound. When they were running at max my legs started to cool down as the fans sucked in voluminous amounts or air. ;)
  • I have run Safari with as many as 20 web pages open and have seen no issues.
  • I have configured to allow booting from external boot images.
  • Have configured to have the Startup chime sound....sublime IMO.
  • Have booted up with Option key to select my desired boot device; no issues with this at all.
  • I have booted up on 10.15.4 Beta latest build 19E224g and ran many of the things I've listed above and no issues seen.
  • At this time I feel/sense my MP7,1 is in good shape.

I'm giving my 12x 32GB NEMIX R-DIMMs the thumbs up sign... 👍

I apologize in advance because this is the most tangential question to the topic: How did you setup a boot chime?

P.S. Glad to hear it's working!

execute in Terminal the following command...

sudo NVRAM StartupMute=%00

and then reboot to bring back the Startup chime 👍 :)

Just tried this, didn't work on my 2018 MBP. I will try with my iMac Pro later.

Edit: Nevermind, it works. I just had my entire system muted.

The boot chime thingy doesn't work after you perform a NVRAM reset , though .

It's the same operation that took offline my unauthorized CPU upgrade in the MP7,1.

Yes, this rescinding the boot chime is a well known fact if NVRAM is reset. People obviously need to be aware of this fact. :)

I have an Apollo Twin set up with monitors. I wonder if this is why the chime is not sounding after I entered the code...
