G3 iMac DV as a media server?

My sister wants to buy an TV. She owns a MBP and an iMac DV G3 with 128MB of RAM that runs at 400MHz (I think).

I know that the possibility of playing back video from the ITMS is comical but does the G3 have enough chutzpah to be a server for the TV in streaming mode? This is, of course, assuming that you can install iTunes 8 on the thing.

Well you need OS 10.4+ for running iTunes 8. And with 128 megs of RAM forget it. Not sure what the max RAM is on those iMacs but if you can get it to 1gb and get 10.4 on the machine then I think streaming video maybe possible.

If anything upgrade the iMac and try streaming video to the MBP via Front Row to test it out. If it runs fairly smooth then I'd say the AppleTV would probably work out too. But believe me, the iMac is going to baaarely be capable.

Sounds like a good idea but when you look at the practicalities of it, I would suggest no. The iMac DV's as with the PowerMac G3's will only support an internal drive of 127GB but no larger, and it only has USB 1.1, which would mean streaming anything other than music would suck. Also if you're planning to stream over WiFI - don't forget that the iMac DV only supports 802.11b and not G or N, so pulling album art over the network would also suck, you may get some choppy performance.

So yes in theory it would work. You can max out the iMac DV with 512MB RAM and upgrade the hard drive, install OS X 10.4.11 and install iTunes 8, but personally I wouldn't.
