Hello All,

I was testing out my IMac G3 (slotLoading) to watch some divx movies and noticed alot of dropped frames. My friend told me this is mainly b/c G3's donot have AltiVec? Either or, by any chance is there any players out there that is optimized for the G3 to watch divx?

G3-optimized is sort of impossible...

If you say something is G4 or G5 optimized, that means that it is optimized for the Altivec unit in those processors. The G3 has no such unit, so applications are simply written for G3's (basically).

here is exacly what you need to do..

get mplayer (pretty much any version) then open preferences and check the "drop frames on slower machines"

even though it does drop frames it plays MUCH smoother than it will without that option on.

I concur! I have a 600 mhz G3 iBook from 2001 and I use MPlayer for most of my DiVX needs. It plays slow in high action scenes, but overall it plays well. I really need a new machine, like my friend's new PB 15" 1.67 gig... the new model!! *drool*

I tried Mplayer, but it would always automatically close itself. Any suggestions?

vlc works great on my brother's g3 400. not only is it not a resource hog, it also plays absolutely every kind of file you can throw at it. i use it for pretty much all my video.

Any suggestions on how I can make Mplayer to work without having it quit on itself?
