So this problem has been bugging me for some time.

My quad g5 on 10.5.8 can sleep fine if I select sleep from the Apple menu. But if I set an inactive timer in Energy Preferences it never goes to sleep.

Looking at console, it appears the computer never attempts to go to sleep at all as I don't see any of the normal kernel messages.

Has anyone come across this before?

In the past when I've had problems with system sleep, this free App has always worked for me.
Works every time as long as the menu sleep command is still functional.
Unfortunately that just downloads their crapware Macupdate desktop.

MacUpdate should not be used as a source for anything anymore.

Sorry about that, I normally use MacUpdate as a search tool, then do direct to the dev website for the download.
Anyhow if you still want to try the App here is a DropBox link.

Thank you very much for that. It worked.

I was momentarily confused when I walked back to my computer and didn't hear the fan.

@Tito910 I have seen this issue caused by some USB and FireWire devices, especially keyboards and mice. I had a cheap keyboard that was designed with the Mac layout, but when connected to my G5 it would not automatically sleep and would occasionally kernel panic. I hated the keyboard and upgraded to an Apple Wireless Keyboard and sleep issues were resolved. It is certainly worth looking into, as I have seen many peripherals cause similar behavior.
