hello people,

first time as a registered user and i'm happily nervous.

i've got a g5 sitting doing nothing and would like to employ it as a file server.

it's a mixed environment and i wonder whether you could offer me any advice as to which is the best way to go.

of course, i want the best performance i can get. is OS X the best way to go or should i look at linux?

as i say, most people on the (small) network are mac users but there are a few windows machines.

any help much appreciated.

I doubt you'll see any difference between OS X or Linux. The main concern would be backing up that data. Does your backup solution allow you to backup Mac systems?

Backing up

Hello,

Well one of the reasons I'd like a central file server is for backing up.

I've just joined a small company who have close to no backup going on.

Can i use OS X server in mixed environments?

thanks,

Sure, it'll work. If you have Active Directory, I believe you can join your OS X server to that and use AD authentication for access.
