It's a dual 2.7 GHz G5 with 1 GB of RAM, and it's only 8 months old. The HD is already 50% full since I transferred all the data from my G3 to the G5 when I bought it. Three months ago, I started noticing that the boot times were slower than before. What worries me is the sound coming from the computer. I don't know where it's originating from, but it might be the HD. There's a continious squeaking sound coming from inside when the white screen with the grey swirly thing is spinning. After about 10-15 seconds, the HD starts reading normally, and then starts loading the OS, which only takes about 3-4 seconds.

There's also another problem which wasn't there when I first bought the G5. The optical drive keeps clicking, and then makes a low beeping sound. It happens when I wake the computer up from sleep, or sometimes it happens randomly when there's nothing in the tray.

What about the data on my HD? Formatting it is out of the question.

And what about the optical drive clicking?

Uh, anyone? These slow boot times and the clicking noise is getting real annoying.

Why? Can't you just migrate it back to the G3, format the drive on the G5 and migrate it back?
EDIT: Also download and run cocktail.

What about the optical drive issue, then? The slow boot is annoying, but the loud clicking sound coming from the optical drive worries me. It always clicks twice after waking up from sleep, and sometimes clicks randomly when there's nothing in the tray.

I can't do anything during the boot, all thanks to my Bluetooth keyboard. I might have an older wired keyboard lying around, though. I'll give it a try if I find it.
