I'm getting ready to buy several new computers for my work this summer. We're a non-profit arts education center and the machines we use need to be adequate for graphic design and desktop publishing work (mainly in Adobe CS2 Suite) and will also be used for basic word processing (office 2004), filemaker pro 7, quickbooks pro 2005, and some occasional imovie and audio editing.
Everything we have right now is pretty old, the newest machine being a dual 1ghz g4 quicksilver. We find this machine to be ok, though everything else is painfully slow and problematic at this point.
Of our four machines, I am hoping to replace at least two of them in the next two months. Though I do have enough money earmarked for new g5's (as a nonprofit we can purchase at the educational/government rate), I am wondering about people's thoughts on the cost vs. benefit ratio for the kind of work we do. We're not running protools of Final Cut, which seems like what G5's are geared for. I can certainly save a lot of money looking for used 1.42 MDD machines, but I am not sure those would give me the performance boost and longevity that I want.
We're probably sticking with Adobe CS2 for the forseeable future, and I'd like whatever I buy to last for a few years, so I am imagining G5's to be the best way to go. Then of course, there is the whole impending intel transition looming...
