G5 MacPro case for PC motherboard and PS?

Aloha,

How easy would it be to reuse a G5 MacPro tower case for an Intel rebuild. Are the power supply mounts, motherboard mounts, etc all standard ATX or something different and not compatible with PC parts?

There's one going for $50 bucks on craigslist close to me.

It would take some serious work to make it a Hackintosh, but you would have an undeniably beautiful case

With a bit of time it's doable. The G5's are a zillion times easier to convert to a PC than the Mac Pros (trust me, I'm the owner of a Mac Pro hackintosh).

Have a look over at the mods section of the insanelymac forums and the aquamac forums. Off the top of my head from what I've seen for G5 cases you can get away with very little if you don't want to spend much or bother making the back look pretty after you've dremelled it out.

None of the mounts are standard though so you *will* have to do some hacking around. Honestly though, G5 case mods really aren't *that* hard. You can go as little as cutting out a hole for ports at the back, moving the motherboard mounts (snapping them off and metal-glueing them to where they should be for an ATX board, wiring up the power button and bolting the PSU on the inside front of the case. Of course, you'd be better off taking some time and do it properly.

Thanks for the replies, the seller says he was going to fix it, he thinks it's the motherboard. Looks not half bad in the low res craigslist photos. I always thought those cases were great looking! Almost got a Mac Pro instead of my 27" iMac just because of the case...

Going to check it out tomorrow evening. Don't think I'll try to fix it unless it's dead simple, even then what would I do with an air cooled G5? I'm handy with tools and have access to some machine shop tools as well. This could be a fun project, maybe a Sandy Bridge Thunderbolt i7 motherboard Hackintosh.

A hackintosh like that sounds great! Although I wouldn't expect to see Thunderbolt heading to PC motherboards for a few months yet. Mind you, build yourself a Sandy Bridge hackintosh now and if you really want Thunderbolt then all you'd have to do is swith the motherboards down the line.
