Ok, so I already had my stock 160gig drive and I added a 250gig to the second bay. I recently got 2 more 250gig drives and installed them in the space infront of the fans by where the memory goes. I got an sata card and on of those drive bracket. I have those two drives connected to the power supply that is running the optical drive. However there doesn't seem to be enough power in the G5 to startup all the disks at once. From time to time it shuts off right after pressing the power button. So I need another way to power these 2 additional drives. Any advice would be great.

I've looked at stuff like this...

If if use the power supply that comes with that it should work right? Though can one of those power 2 drives with a y-splitter or do i need one for each drive?

I'd like to avoid getting a full blown noisy pc power supply if I can.

I've also see these...

Two SATA drives aren't going to require that much power. You shouldn't be having a problem. An SATA drive is going to pull 12 or so watts max.

If your G5 can't come up with an extra 24 watts, there's something wrong with it.

I agree. There's something wrong. What kind of PCI card do you have to power the two SATA drives. Also do you have other PCI cards.

I now have a total of 4 sata drives. 2 in the stock bays, and 2 additional. The 2 new ones are running off the optical drive power supply with a y-splitter. I have a 9800 ATI video card, sata card, and a firewire 800 card. 4 gigs RAM. It's a 2.5 DP.

If I need a new power supply do I need to send my whole tower in or can they send it to me so I can swap it out myself? I know Apple sent out replacement powersupplies in the really loud mirrored door G4 days. We got a bunch of them at my last job and I remember we switched them out ourselves and sent the loud ones back to Apple afterward. I do have Applecare so I should be good regardless. I might leave out the part about adding additional internal drives when I call them though. :D
