I tried to order my up-to-date Panther upgrade online and my purhchase date and serial number wouldn't go through.
[it was BTO, that may be why...]

I then called the number at the bottom of the screen and talked to a rep. who said that Apple hasn't amde all the G5 serial numbers available to them (the Apple reps that take orders over the phone) and that she recommends that I send/fax the order form (found on the 'Upgrade' tab in the Panther section) to them with my
info.

Ok, thats cool... but when I actually read the terms it says that it only entitles purchasers who made their purchase "on or after August 16th, 2003."

WTF??? the main UTD page blatently says "regardless of purchase date", yet the order form is G5 specific, so it cannot be referring to something else. If this is true, I missed it by one week.

This happened to me when I actually bought FCP 2, instead of pirating it like most other students. Missed the UTD upgrade to FCP 3 by 4 days and they wouldn't do sh!+.

Please, someone, prove me wrong...

10.3 Up-to-Date Coupon for G5 notes August 16 and later orders - I've gotten more mails from G5 owners that said their serial numbers were not validated for the 10.3 up-to-date offer, even when checked during a call to the Apple order number - not just the online form. (Tip: If you're having problems with the online form, some owners wrote to say they had used a hyphen/dash in the S/N which when removed passed the check. My S/N on the machine had no dashes, although ASP's listing included one. That didn't solve everyone's S/N verification problems however.)
To add to the confusion - I downloaded the G5 10.3 Up-to-Date PDF coupon tonight that's currently linked on the up-to-date page which says:

"... Customers who purchase a qualifying new PowerMac G5 ... on or after August 16th, 2003..." (emphasis mine)

Despite the fact the text on the up-to-date page says (for G5s) that the offer is valid "regardless of purchase date".
Hopefully the PDF coupon is in error and the text on the page is correct. BTW - Even though my order was taken around noon ET today and my 9/15 shipped XB337... S/N checked out apparently (I was given a order confirmation number), I still have not received a confirmation email. I wonder if the reason why my original order date of June 23rd was not accepted is related to the date requirements listed on the PDF coupon. I'm going to call the 800 number for the up-to-date offer tomorrow to try and get an answer. (They're closed after 8PM ET.)

Everyone that bought a G5 early was originally very happy about the $19.95 10.3 offer not being limited by purchase date (per the page text), but the confusion on S/N's and the discrepancy between the PDF coupon and the web page has put a damper on that. Hopefully this will be be cleared up within the next day or two.

Although I often don' t follow my own advice, I try to caution readers to be leery of buying the first release of any new design/model (due to potential quirks/flaws, etc. in a first rev.), but for some it seems most everything associated with the early G5 buying experience has been more frustrating than it should have been.
Regardless of how the 10.3 upgrade offer turns out, I'm still pleased with the G5 here. If I have to pay full price for 10.3, I'll still buy it, but will wait to see how it plays out as far as compatibility and bugs first.

I have the same problem, I called Apple Store (netherlands) twice to try to get the upgrade kit. My G5 was ordered before the 16th of August, Apple Store employees denied me the upgrade. In fact, the second time I called the spokeperson blatently disconnected me after me calling him unfriendly.
The problem that I have is the date. I was pretty early in ordering my G5 but it hasn't arrived until just 3 weeks ago! There are a lot of people that ordered the G5 after 16th of August and their machines arrived on the same date as mine, or even earlier. So I'm an early adopter, and having to wait 2 months for the machine to finally ship I get another blow in the face.
I'm quite upset now with Apple's customer friendlyness. I now have to buy the OS my machine was built for for 150 euros just 3 weeks after being delivered!
I will be running Panther, one way or the other. This sucks big time.

MacsRgr8, I didn't know you also bought a G5, I'm now aware of two G5's in Holland! :D

(or was your entire post a quote from accelerateyourmac? Anyway, I'm also featured in that article now heheh)

No G5 for me (yet).. gotta wait a couple of months till I get the finances together, I'm afraid :(

Yeah, the post indeed a quote. Copy-pasted it for easy reading purposes.

BTW good for you for getting one! Must be one of the first in these low-lands ;)

Thanks m8, and now I need to get my hands on Panther (the UPGRADE mind you) I feel I'm entitled to.
