G5s after Mac pro launch?

Hi all,

Based on Apples previous PPC to Intel moves do you think the G5s will still be available from the online store (I know you'll still be able to get them from retailers).

Will they drop them on the launch day or keep selling , and if they do for how long?

Apple has told stores to get rid of those old & slow G5s so who knows, Im sure you will be able to find refurbished ones for a long time at Apple.

How do you know this?

Plus, what is defined as "old and slow" - the powermac range has a lot of punch in it!

As a long time Mac user trust me, Apple will have G5s at its refurb site for a long time. As far as speed goes the new Intels simply hammer the G5 and the AMD stuff. Thats the way it is, G5 wasnt all that never was. Also the ProBooks are up for a update real soon but if you are sold on G5 for whatever reasons there will be a lot of them for sale very soon. My 2 cents is wait and see what Apple does this summer. They have a lot of models due for updates and with these new Intel chips you can get one very fast machine. G5 is .....almost.......gone

The Power Mac G5s will still be available for sale for a good while after the Mac Pros are released.

No, but they will be available from sellers who are selling them secondhand, and from the Apple Certified refurbished store. Look in there, they still have PowerBook G4s, they will have PowerMac G5s for a while.

There's no telling that for sure... but I would hope they do this. A lot of people are still buying towers for applications that are PowerPC only, like Adobe CS2 for example.

It would be SO sweet if Adobe surprised us Monday with a Universal Binary version of CS2.

And SO not going to happen.

I expect Apple will offer them at least as refurbs, if not as a sort of "just in case model" for quite a while; remember that when the last of the OS9 bootable towers went out of production, Apple kept selling it for quite some time. Likewise, after the all-PCIe G5 towers shipped, Apple kept the dual 2.7 with PCI-X around for a while for people who really needed one for those cards.

I don't see Apple not doing the same thing with this transition; there are still a handful of people who want Classic, and more importantly there are a number of high-end apps that simply will not run nearly as well on even the beefiest first-run Intel tower as a G5. They'll be swept into a corner, no doubt, but probably still around for a while.

I agree, but i think Apple will still drop it from their website as soon as their supply of G5 Powermacs have been depleted.
